If you are media-savvy, then it's extremely likely that you have several programs installed on your computer to perform various tasks, such as playing video and audio, streaming media and downloading videos. 5KPlayer for Windows is a versatile media player that will help you perform all these tasks without looking for any other application.

Features:

  • Playing different types of video, including 4K, 5K and 1080p HD videos
  • Playing different audio formats, such as MP3, FLAC, APE and AAC
  • Playing Internet radio
  • Built-in AirPlay sender and receiver

Using 5KPlayer for Windows

Installation of the 5KPlayer went smoothly, although our Firewall blocked some of the player's features on all public and private networks when we launched it for the first time.

The player had a dark-themed graphical user interface that displayed tabs to access various features in the middle, contrary to many players that featured menu bars at the top section of the interface. The interactive tabs were for Video, DVD, Music and Radio on the upper row with two prominent tabs for YouTube and AirPlay below them.

Placing the cursor on a tab brought it to the forefront. We clicked on the DVD tab, and the player displayed a screen where we needed to choose the source disc, which it displayed by its name and drive letter.

Moving the mouse pointer anywhere inside the program window during playback displayed buttons for performing different tasks. The player allowed us to rotate videos either clockwise or anticlockwise at 90-degree angles. We could also display chapters and subtitle tracks.

The player featured a built-in Apple AirPlay module that acted as both sender and receiver. We could use it to connect an air device and PC running 5KPlayer for Windows to the same Wi-Fi network. It let us use our iOS device as a remote while we enjoyed its videos on the larger screen of the computer. Downloading either music or video was as easy as typing or pasting URL, clicking the Analyze button and then clicking the Download button.

We also used the program to stream online radio stations by inputting their URLs and clicking the Play button. The player came with 11 pre-loaded stations.

The player allowed us to perform various configurations on how we wanted it to function. For example, we set the preferred format for downloaded videos, their resolution and download folder. Apart from general options, we could also configure AirPlay and Subtitle options.

Conclusion

5KPlayer for Windows is a versatile player that allows you to perform several tasks for which you would otherwise need different applications. In addition to playing different media files, you can use the free player to download media and stream content even from your iOS device using AirPlay. However, it seems to amplify distortions on videos captured with moving camera.

USER REVIEWS

"Turn off the GUI"

Reviewer: -tedwest

Review Date: 2015-09-22

Pros: None

Cons: I hate the dark, cutesy, gimmicky interfaces the programmers of media players and editors feel compelled to put on their product, and I really hate it when they don't offer some sort traditional windows style interface, or in lieu of that, some sort of bright, straightforward, intuitive GUI that's easily navigable.

Other Thoughts: This may be a great player, but it's unlikely I'll ever find out because I'm simply not willing to squint at a dark screen and try to find the controls I'm looking for.
