Software Product Description

DOSBox emulates an Intel x86 PC, complete with sound, graphics, mouse, modem, etc., necessary for running many old DOS games that simply cannot be run on modern PCs and operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux and FreeBSD. However, it is not restricted to running only games. In theory, any DOS application should run in DOSBox, but the emphasis has been on getting DOS games to run smoothly, which means that communication, networking and printer support are still in early developement.

DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games...

You can "re-live" the good old days with the help of DOSBox, it can run plenty of the old classics that don't run on your new computer!

DOSBox is totally free of charge and OpenSource.

What's New in version 0.74:

  • Several small game specific fixes/hacks/support. (Offensive, Roadhog, GTA installer, Kingdom O' Magic soundcard detection, Pirate booter, Armored Fist installer)
  • Add the S3-specific 640x480 256 color mode. (fixes regression in "Wooden Ships and Iron Men" and "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream")
  • Fix a stack overflow that could crash DOSBox.
  • Add fake microphone input. (fixes Talking Parrot)
  • Modify adlib turn off code, so that it doesn't turn off in cases where the same sound is repeated over and over again.

  • Several improvements to the CDROM emulation code. (fixes Alpha Storm and GT Racing 97)

USER REVIEWS

"I guess I'm the only that hates it."

Pros: None for me.

Cons: Can't get the CPU emulation right speed (typecycles) right. I also hate that I have to mount drive C every time DOSBox starts.

Other Thoughts: I'm trying it with the old "Stargunner" game, and I can't get the right speed. It's either way too fast, or way too slow.
