Windows operating system is capable of extracting ZIP archives by default. While ZIP used to be the archive of choice for many users, more people are turning to RAR archives because of their higher compression ratio and sub-volume compression feature. This is whereby you can split larger files into several smaller ones, making them easier to store and transfer. You need a third-party application to extract RAR files, which is where Free RAR Extractor comes in handy.

Using Free RAR Extractor

The setup process was simple and fast although our computer warned us against installing the software because it was rarely downloaded. We launched it immediately after the installation process, and it opened a small, square window that did not feature a menu bar.

We had spaces for selecting the RAR file that we wanted to extract and the output folder. By default, the extractor specified the source RAR file name as the output folder, but we could browse and select another folder. If the specified folder did not exist, the program automatically created it. When we were dealing with a multi-volume compression file, we selected the first file and the program included the remaining files whose names matched the same format.

Three check boxes between these two spaces were all that we had to configure the software.

If the archive was protected with a password, then we clicked the "Password" check box and entered the correct login. The other two check boxes respectively let us choose whether we wanted the software to automatically overwrite a file if it already existed in the destination folder and open the output folder after extracting.

When we clicked the "Extract" button, a pop-up window appeared where we need to confirm whether we wanted to go ahead with the extraction process. A progress bar on the lower part of the application window let us monitor how the extraction was going. However, it only made meaning when dealing with large files since the extraction process was fast.

Conclusion

Free RAR Extractor is a lightweight program that is specifically designed to extract RAR archives. It supports encrypted and multi-volume archives and is compatible with Windows systems with .NET Framework 4.0 or above.
