Publisher's Description

Iris is a software that offers numerous and powerful functions of image processing in the field of the digital astronomical images. Iris is particularly optimized to exploit the images that come from CCD cameras.

Iris will load and save pictures in the formats FITS, PIC (proprietary format), raw or BMP. Iris can read also the images of the Buil-Thouvenot Atlas, a CD-ROM which contains 4649 images of 6600 objects of the deep-sky.

From the Command window you can execute numerous commands in on-line mode. The on-line mode of Iris is extremely practical, notably to make repetitives operations. When you will master it you will have a powerful productivity tool in hand.

Finally, Iris possesses functions helping the Audine CCD camera construction. The project Audine was developed by the Association of the Users of Electronic Detectors (AUDE). Iris is a part of this project.

Version 5.53 now supports the 48-bit FITS format (true color, 3 x 16 bits), as well for input and output. The functionality available in the PIC format proprietary PIC are also now available with the FITS. The PIC format retains some an advantage in terms of disk loading and saving speed.

Astrometric calibrated FITS images are now compatible with WCS (World Coordinates System). WCS can map pixels in the image to right ascension and declination on the sky.

What's New in version 5.57:

  • Support of Canon 5D mk2 and Panasonic DMC-LX3

Pros:  None

Cons:  None

Other Thoughts:  I had always wondered about the software for the treatment of digital images that the astronomers use. I admit that I am a novice in the matter, but IRIS seems to be the answer. This extraordinary standalone of French fashion that can operate from a rar, has a such quantity of complex tools of treatment of astronomical images that, it does not fit me doubt, it will be the favorite of the passionate observers of the firmament. Their gratuitousness and versatility increase their attractiveness notably.
