If you want a simple way of finding, installing and playing indie games, then use itch. The app keeps all the games and other applications that you download in one place.

Using itch

The software was digitally signed with Amos Wenger Open Source Developer certificate, which we verified by right-clicking the installer and selecting "Properties".

When we launched itch for the first time, it prompted us to enter our itch.io credentials. Although the app had an offline mode, we could not use it anonymously. However, we did not have full access to our account when we logged in via the app. We only accessed the games that we had downloaded and our list of collections.

The app allowed us to log in to multiple sessions using different user accounts. All the sessions could launch the installed games but not update them. Once we had used the app to log in, we could henceforth use it offline. We could even continue using it when we disconnected from the internet while it was running.

We set up itch to use sandbox, which prevented possible attacks from malicious games. To do that, we ran commands that created an account called "itch-player". Sandbox setup required administrator privileges.

The in-app browser allowed us to access the whole itch.io website to find games. When we found a game that we liked, we clicked the "Install" button to download it. We needed to purchase the games that we did not yet own.

We could add games to our collections, which we were able to browse even without an internet connection. The collections also helped us to better organize our games. We opened each collection in its own tab.

itch also had a game developer mode, which developers could use to distribute applications to be installed and ran with the app.

Conclusion

Playing indie games is wonderful and even more so when you can conveniently access them in one location. This is what the itch app will help you achieve. The app automatically updates itself and the installed games but the updates take effect after a re-start. It is compatible with Windows 7 and later operating systems.
