Using Looken Free Desktop
Looken Free Desktop requires about 85 MB of free disk space and installs fast. When we launched the program for the first time, it gave us a summary of its functions and features. It started a refresh of the search index when we were still looking at the simple user interface with a large area for displaying search results.
The software updated the number of new and all files on the lower right corner of the program window, which appeared as a link. Clicking the link opened notepad displaying a detailed index log.
On the upper part of the window was a prominent search box for typing required text. The program displayed results as soon as we started typing our search term, and it updated the list in real time as we continued typing. We did not even need to click the green search button on the right of the search box. The program displayed the number of files found.
Depending on the number of results, we applied more filters to narrow down the search results. For example, we chose the type of data, time-frame and archive to search. The program showed the number of results by year below the search results, which we could also use to zero in on what we wanted.
By default, clicking on an item in the search list displayed its preview on the right pane. However, we could choose to show the preview at the bottom of the interface or turn it off. Apart from displaying the preview, we could show the original document either as read only or in edit mode, which allowed us to edit text directly on the pane.
Looken Free Desktop allowed us to configure the way we wanted it to function. Some of the things we could customize included the duration in which it should automatically index items or clear index, maximum characters in preview and performing automatic cleanup to reduce memory usage. We could also customize its appearance, including the details to feature in the search columns.
Looken Free Desktop is a handy tool for searching data even if you have forgotten file names and their locations. The free Windows search utility only indexes drive C by default, but you can include external drives or paths under the Index tab in the Options menu. It displays results quickly once it has created a search index.
