Windows 10 and Windows 8 store information about network usage in their SRUDB.dat databases. The details collected include names and descriptions of applications or services, network adapters and the number of bytes that the applications or services send and receive as well as the names and SIDs of users. The operating systems collect the information on an hourly basis. You need a special application to extract and view these details, and a good choice is NetworkUsageView.

Features and Functions

You do not need to install NetworkUsageView because it is a portable application. What is important is for you to download the correct version for your system - whether it is a 64-bit or 32-bit machine - and extract it to a suitable location.

The application launches as soon as you double-click the executable file and displays items after a few seconds. However, you may need to launch it with elevated privileges to display content if your SRUDB.dat database is locked. The status bar at the bottom of the application window will display the total number of items and selected ones.

The application window neatly arranges the following details in columns: Record ID, Timestamp, App Name, App Description, User Name, User ID, Network Adapter, Bytes Sent and Bytes received.

Right-clicking on an item opens a context menu that gives you several options, including saving or copying selected items, generating HTML report of all or selected items, choosing columns, auto sizing columns, viewing properties and refreshing the list. You can also perform these options via the menu bar by clicking the appropriate menu item and selecting the desired option.

The "Options" menu lets you choose whether to load network usage data from the local computer, external SRUDB.dat database or remote computer. You can also specify then time-frame whose data you want to display.

Conclusion

NetworkUsageView is a handy application for extracting and viewing network usage data in a compatible Windows operating system. You can export the data in HTML format.
