The Internet has made it possible for almost anyone to run an online radio station. However, your success or failure will largely depend on the software you use. RadioDJ is a free radio automation software with advanced features. It is a relatively lightweight program that requires standard PC hardware with at leat 512 MB RAM, 1000 MHz CPU and any soundcard compatible with Windows. You also need at least Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 although you should preferably use a higher version.

Main Features:

  • Integrated Shoutcast encoder
  • Voicetracking support
  • Audio Processor plugin
  • Auto skip silence
  • Automatically overlap sweepers
  • Back up and restore database
  • Compatible with several plug-ins

Using RadioDJ

Before you install RadioDJ, you need a database program like MySQL, which it requires to store various types of data it uses. Once you have installed your database or already have one, you need to download the latest version of RadioDJ, which is usually in ZIP format for easier update.

We extracted our archive on the RadioDJ folder on our C drive. The developer recommended this method to avoid possible conflicts with high security settings. We launched the "Database Setup.exe" from the Setup subfolder to create our database. We then created a desktop shortcut for "RadioDJ.exe" that we used for launching the main program.

The program featured an intuitive graphical user interface that enabled us to easily customize it to our liking. The clean interface did not confuse us with unnecessary bells and whistles, making it not only easy on our eyes but also professional-looking. The areas we configured included the album art folder to ensure it pointed to an existing folder to prevent possible errors. We also ensured that all categories had subcategories that the program used to import tracks. We could import individual tracks or entire directories. The radio automation software allowed us to create as many categories as we wanted.

We could modify the details of our audio files, such as song title, album, track number, year and author. Alternatively, we could import the details from existing ID3 tags.

We were impressed with RadioDJ's stability. When we made a deliberate error by omitting something from the database, the program simply went to the next element without crashing.

Conclusion

RadioDJ is a simple but robust radio automation software that makes it easy to run an Internet radio station. It can run for long periods without the need for a reboot because it does not crash easily. You can accomplish playouts using different approaches depending on your preference. The ability to configure playlists in advance gives you the opportunity to focus on the quality of your broadcast.
