Changes made to Windows Registry can have a negative impact on a computer, and having a way of tracking the changes is important. RegistryChangesView is a special tool for taking snapshots of the registry for comparisons. Comparing an earlier registry snapshot with the current one will help you to identify the specific changes made to the registry.

Features and Functions

RegistryChangesView is a portable application that does not require any additional DLL files to run. Simply extract the archive and run the executable file.

When you launch the application, its window will give you the option to select two registry snapshots that you would like to compare. You can choose different data sources for each snapshot, including Shadow Copy, Saved Registry Snapshot and Current Registry. So long as the two snapshots are not identical, you may use any combination.

You can easily create and use a new registry snapshot by selecting "Saved Registry Snapshot" under data source and clicking the "Create Registry Snapshot" button. If you are in the main application window, then simply press the F8 key to create a new snapshot. You will choose the destination folder where you want to save the new snapshot. Creating a snapshot takes only a few seconds.

Once you have selected the two registry snapshots that you want to compare, you will need to set two options. The "Direction" option lets you specify the snapshot that you want to use as the base for comparison. Depending on the direction you choose, the identified changes may be marked as added key/value or removed key/value. The selected direction will also determine the way the program generates a .reg file.

The "Hives to compare" option lets you select the registry hives that you want to compare. You simply select or deselect options according to your requirements.

As already indicated, you may use the software to generate a .reg file. You can export only selected or all items. The generated file will make changes according to the direction used.

Conclusion

RegistryChangesView is a portable application that makes it easy to compare two registry snapshots and determine the changes made. You can use it for different purposes. For example, you may take snapshots before and after installing a program to determine the changes it has made to the registry. You may also use it as a way of backing up your Windows Registry.
