Tux Paint is an Open Source (free, and free to copy and redistribute) drawing program for young children (ages 2 and up).

It provides a simple interface, with one-click saving, thumbnail browser loading, and automatic reloading of the last picture when you start back up. It's also entertaining, with a helpful cartoon character and fun sound effects.

Tools include brushes, lines, shapes and a big eraser. The 'Rubber Stamp' tool provides access to countless drawings and photos which can be placed in the drawing (like a child's stickerbook). The 'Magic' tool includes over a dozen special effects.

Tux Paint has been translated into nearly 20 languages, including Spanish, French, German and Italian. It's available as source code, Windows installer, Mac OS X archive, and as packages for Linux (Debian, Red Hat, Mandrake, etc.)

"Fun for all ages"

Pros: Easy to figure out Powerful enough for kiddies Fun effects

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: My 5 & 6 year old granddaughters love this app on an old laptop with Linux. They can't read, but once I showed them around they know what button does what. I'd use it myself if I wasn't a Gimp power user.
