7Zip is absolutely the best compression software I've used. Its fast & opens almost anything. Gets better with every release. Looking forward to the new time stamp feature! by: RSparrow | 5 | 2008-03-29 | | | | "Great!"
This is a great archive compression program. A great "free" alternative to WinZip or WinRAR. I also install it on my clients, and friends machines. by: PC Builder | 5 | 2008-03-25 | | | | "Not perfect ,but still v.good"
Great program for free. The 7zip format gives really good compression ratios, plus they can be encrypted. All credit to the author, and if it keeps being updated, one day it just might be perfect, for now it's still a very good zip program. by: deebee | 5 | 2008-03-21 | | | | "Good"
7Zip has it's good & it's bad.
Good: Supports unzipping many formats, including rar, zip, 7zip, & certain EXE extractions on right click menu.
It IS free.
The cons: It COULD be simpler to use, the file navigation doesn't work as nicely as the windows navigation pane & has it's quirks.
Win Rar SFX allows you to choose the icon for your SFX, includes far more options, & overall, slams 7Zip, & compresses almost as tightly.
If 7zip can fix the GUI bug, make their SFX packager more robust, then you might see a new king emerge.
But for now, it just is not ready to be a RAR replacement. by: Junk Buster | 5 | 2008-03-20 | | | | "Great !"
7 Zip has All I Need with no doubt
Thx to Igor Pavlov by: Bagus Surya | 5 | 2008-03-07 | | | | "Good!"
While WinZip & other apps claim to extract files from .EXE files in addition to SFX creation, they usually fall short & lacking. Winzip falls short in the SFX department, & there is no need to use it since winrar supports everything WinZip does & extracts all the files it does as well.
However, enter 7Zip. It can extract even files that winrar cannot, such as from NSIS installer files. Not saying it is perfect or can do all things, but generally, if winrar can, 7Zip can as well, + a few that winrar cannot.
With the LZMA + solid option for compression, 7Zip should take the lead on the smallest sizes.
The only area I can see for improvement in 7Zip is the need for silent SFX option with Icon creation + the ability to run a file before & after extraction with the license screen...
Hey, why do you need that? Simple. I can make silent EXE that dump say, a driver backup program to a temp dir, then launch the program & ccleaner can come behind and clean it.
You can do "Run Driver Backup Program?" in winrar & have it extract silently if they click yes. Really, really handy.
If only 7Zip had that, & add one last feature, the ability to add a start menu shortcut.
I would be living in 7zip dream world.
If I had that, I would almost feel like chuncking all other archiver programs to the curb.
If you are wanting to be sure none of your files get overwritten, try something like ExtractNow.
It gives all unzipped files their own folder so they don't overwrite anything with the same name (say, 2 zip folders have a file named setup.exe for diff programs though).
This might not be possible, but if 7zip also included that.....
What would there be left to ask for?

7zip kicks winzip and other ziping
programs butt!:) by: Mack | 5 | 2008-01-26 | | | | "the only one that works flawless"
I agree that the GUI is a bit ugly. However, it's the only freeware archiver I know, that can handle all promised archives without flaws and errors. Highly recommended when reliability and functionality are paramount to you. by: Sneaky Crankbunny | 5 | 2008-01-10 | | | | "the best"
works very good, small yet reliable by: ablackmice | 5 | 2008-01-04 | | | | "I agree"
I agree that it's ugly. But I agree also that it works best. Never ever had a problem extracting a file. 7-zip can handle everything. Good & reliable! by: Froggy Doggy | 4 | 2007-12-25 | | | | "v- 4.57"
As with other releases, it installs without any formats/file extensions set as defaults-- I find this odd; should at least have some of the basics set. Anyway,on its GUI, File Manager, on toolbar Tools>Options>System tab is the formats/extensions list.
The program has worked well for me through several releases (plus I'm used to it). by: mweizor | 4 | 2007-12-08 | | | |
