All the free AV programs have there nags Avast has got less AVG linkscanner some green checked websites do contain excesive pop ups closed 8 one website alone!
Avira too many false positives often flags good files as trojans/malware.
Avast don't like the interface.

Avast is in the filed of cyber security for many years but for in the case of proactive defense,it still lags behind.For effective system protection use Avira free AV with Comodo firewall along some good antispyware like Adaware basic version. Cheers

"Superior over Expectation"
I tried several free AntiVirus and found Avast is the best of them.
AVG - takes too much CPU resources and slows programs down.
Avira - daily popup with a large screen that blocks off all your other applications, asking you to buy a pro version.
Avast - without any of the above nuisances. What's more, if your computer is connected to Internet, it speaks on the loudspeaker saying "your virus database has been updated". That's really wonderful.

i would pay attention to nod32's review as it makes a lot of sense.
If want a genuine free av program then this is your best choice.
Its not perfect but it is good.
AVG is "heavy" as said and it has also developed annoying pop up prompts recently to upgrade to pro as has Avira tbh.
Comodo used to be the no1 free choice but i got a bit upset at the ASK toolbar it installed without my permission although it is good on resources.
So that leaves avast and tbh i have only been using it a week so im still not that used to it yet.
You do have to register it but thats a small price to pay i think so i wouldn't let that put me off.
Maybe a little tad heavy on resources compared to nod32 that i previously used but again its free so i will put up with that.
Scans are much quicker than AVG and they are variable with a resident scanner.
It also has good detection if you are using p2p software.
It has many good features including boot scan and database recovery feature.
All in all, if you want good protection but don't want to pay then avast is a no brainer..

Avast is the best most complete free AV AVG 7.5 virus corrupted system 32 files had to reformat reinstall Vista AVG 8 is a resource hog Windows Vista reports "avgcc.exe is using an unusually high amount of RAM "one would have thought this avgcc.exe was a virus message also has no rootkit detection .Avira Antvir also good although free version no email scanner Avira excellent detection, on the downside lots of false positives too.
