As a long-term user of both AdAware and Spybot (both excellent but the former slightly stronger IMHO) I have now changed to Defender which is rather more "set it and forget it". I now run Spybot about once a month "just in case" but it regularly finds nothing.

"A pain"
Did not defende appropriatly against spyware and such. I have had to use ad-aware as a second wall defense in order to eliminate such ware. Difficult to uninstall and leave behind many residues not to mention the registery. I have had to use another software to clean the mess up. I will await before buying Vista...that is for sure.

"Too Many Problems!"
Downloaded a beta version (believe current download is also beta) and installed on my computer (2.4GHz C2D). Defender conflicted with other programs, would not update correctly, and caught no spyware during the short period installed. The uninstall left numerous file and registry remnants behind. If this is an example of the software included with Vista, it's probably a good idea to wait a few years before updating to the new OS.

you see craposoft(microsoft) makes programs for there os that spy on you like windows messenger,ie7 blows and so does this program. why is it when i run webroot or another commercial anti spyware program they pick up everything. yes i understand this is free, but then again a person has to realize microsoft has a ton of money to support there products and with a full scan taking an hour and ten minutes,granted i have a large system, other top programs do the same in 20 minutes. thanks craposoft for yet another crappy program

Congratulations to Microsoft for making a perfectly average program in the overly-saturated market of free spyware defense. The app has never netted any spyware on my computer so I don't know how effective it is. I do know that the update module works because it asks me all the time! Again, that's nothing new with AV/Spyware apps.

MS Windows Defender is a solid program that delivers as promised. Unfortunately, it is also a major resource hog, especially HDD access! Schedule it to run at machine idle times when you're not likely to be using your machine.
