Avast will scan them while they're being downloaded. by: TheManWithTheGoldenG | 5 | 2009-05-22 |

"Gave Avast the bullet"
Now using Avira Antvir free superior AV,voted number 1 the only AV that can scan locked locked files for hidden malware virustotal, virusbulletin, avcomparatives, cnet ,Techsupport Alert ,gizmos 46 best security.
Consistently at or near the top of independent efficacy testers, Avira's AntiVir remains one of the best freeware security solutions around. Its scans are flexible, allowing the user to fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan--for rootkits, for example--or customize a scan. The latest version introduces antispyware protections, scanning tech that can crack open "locked" files, improved internal security to prevent AntiVir's files from being maliciously altered, and one-click threat removal--no more baby-sitting.

"Nice interface and a high detection rate, a silver bullet!"
I like this program as it has a high detection rate. I have a lot of confidence in it. It just works. A windows machine with Avast is nearly as safe from viruses, spyware, rootkits as a Mac or Linux machine. I do not have this confidence in other so called anti-virus programs. Usually they are also some kind of nagware or begware. Avast has a very low profile. I therefore paid a three year subscription for Avast Professional. I wanted to promote such a vendor.
Avast has also different skins to choose from. This is also very easily done by just clicking a button. No other so called anti-virus program has such a ability.

"Good bad and ugly"
like .Good virus detection, rootkit and spyware detection.
Dislike Winamp Player Media Interface also poor proactive virus detection.
The new test, dubbed 'RAP' ('Reactive And Proactive') testing, measures products' detection rates across four distinct sets of malware samples. The first three test sets comprise malware first seen in each of the three weeks prior to product submission. These measure how quickly product developers and labs react to the steady flood of new malware emerging every day across the world.
A fourth test set consists of malware samples first seen in the week after product submission. This test set is used to gauge products' ability to detect new and unknown samples proactively, using heuristic and generic techniques.Unfortunately Avast failed the test.

"Avast has a outstanding capability to scan zip files!"
Just google Eicar and see for yourself. I have also downloaded those zip files and Avast destroyed them immediately.
Some people just wants to talk down a superb program by not telling the truth.
I do not know how some of you people gets all those viruses, Trojans etc. I use Avast, Firefox and WOT (as a site advisor) and I never have any problems.

"Avast the Giant!"
If you use Google and search-AV-Test release latest results-you will find that Avast does very well and this high detection rate combined with all the scanners that Avast is loaded with, will keep a pc free from viruses, spyware, adware etc. This also for free!!

"Awful customer support"
I have been a tech repairing computers for years. I am currently enrolled in ITT-Tech. I have personally tested this program against viruses you can easily download for educational purposes on the web. I have compressed them, and rescanned them. This program can NOT detect anything that has been passed through a packer/real time compression utility. Such a utility would be ASPACK.
To top it off it has failed so many VB Bulletin tests! I have never seen an anti-virus fail so many times.
The testing speaks for itself:

"Why settle for second best"
Avira AntiVir Personal Edition is my top pick for the best free antivirus software if you're looking for the best protection against virus, spyware and rootkit. AntiVir is very light on resources and the detection rate of malware is outstanding.Even though Avira does not have an email scanner if you open an infected email, Avira AntiVir will still spring into action, so it doesn't mean that you're not protected from email-based infections. is renewable.

"Alwil the most serious anti-virus company"
Well you can get, through your email, viruses also from friends or from well known sites who does not know this or by fooling you in some way. I think that most security experts would recommend such a feature and Aviras paid version-Avira AntiVir Premium-is loaded with a email scanner. Also you need to have messenger protection, p2p protection (if you use those features). I would not dare to use Avira Free. I would feel unprotected. As someone said that Avast is like a protective fortress. I have used it for several years and I never have had any malware in my pc. Sometimes I check with NOD32 online scan as no anti-virus software is absolute, not even Avast, but NOD32, though, never finds anything. Avast is, by the way, also generally more awarded by the actual users than any other anti-virus software.

"Avira Better"
Whats the point in all these shields if if lets trojans through.Yes Avira does not have an email scanner but at least it detects and kills any malware unlike Avast. You have to be pretty stupid anyway to open an email attachment file from an unknown sender but at least you can rely on Avira to kill it if you do unlike Avast which will probably not detect any malware anyway .
The overall winner product (best antivirus) of 2008, based on all the tests of 2008, is AVIRA. Avcomaparatives awards TOP Antivirus 2008.Enough said by: ITBob | 1 | 2009-05-09 |

"Yes I know Norton wants to make it difficult to uninstall"
Then a lot of people will pay another license. If you goggle-Avast uninstall- you will find a tool to uninstall Avast properly too, but you do not like as with Norton, really need it to uninstall it. I guess, though, that it will be uninstalled more properly.
I hope that you do not get a virus through your emails as Avira Free does not have a anti-virus email scanner. A lot of viruses are spread through emails, but Avast with all its shield does of course have a important shield like a email scanner which, by the way, is a quite elementary feature. Apart from Avira Free, most anti-virus programs have this feature. by: Stefan Andersson | 5 | 2009-05-08 |
