Love AVG linkscanner protects you from malware virus trojan infested websites even before you open them,unlike Macafee Siteadsvisor free which just gives you a whitelist of potential bad websites .

- Falsely treats all compressed RAR SFX packages as packed trojans
- Falsely treats any REG2EXE scripts as trojans
- Falsely treats Vispa as a trojan because of the way it is packed with NSIS scripts
- Link Scanner causes web browser to crash & exit on sites that aren't even related to malware
- Resident shield blocks the running of, & offers to delete files that are not even related to malware/viruses for you.
* Overall, does as good as Norton, or McAffee, but the competition sometimes flags things falsely as well, so you can pick or choose which one you want.
I use AVG Free, but turn off the resident shield & link scanner.
Every week or so, I scan manually for viruses. Usually, you are safe to add to exceptions if you know it is safe, but sometimes AVG will auto delete something without even asking you if it thinks it is a terrible danger.
Caution: Be sure you have all important things backed up to an external drive, if not DVD.
You cannot get back some things if AVG deletes them, & you never know when a virus definition update will cause it to treat a previously untouched EXE, or whatever else as a virus, trojan, etc.
I work with hundreds of thousands of programs in testing, installing, using, so I am well aware of any malware processes launched by programs, & which ones cause problems or don't.
Be careful, only scan what you are not afraid to lose, or can easily replace if deleted...
Be safe, backup, backup, backup....
And be suspicious of everything!

I took my computer to my local repair shop as it was corrupted with virus and trojans the guy fixed my registry (reformatted ny hard drive)and installed AVG free as he told me he gets alot of people taking computer laptops in with virus spyware infections but none with AVG 8 installed although some have had AVG 7.5.

AVG is the best most complete free antivirus/spyware software, it has better detection than Avast which has a relatively high rate of false postives.I uninstalled Avast for superior AVG (better deytection modern interface easier to use)Avast left over 200 "Alwil" registry entries which had to be deleted manually . Avast also requires periodic re-registration, whereas AVG Free does not.

Most people have a good experience with AVG, so I say try it out. Unlike some other shields, it also detects spyware and some other things, and has one of the most attractive interfaces. Personally, though, having used AVG for three years I find it slow, and disabling or uninstalling seems to leave unwanted residue. The installation can get upset by the mere presence of other security apps, where other virus shields have no problems whatsoever. I've had a handful of viruses attack my computer, and in most cases AVG 8 didn't detect the virus at all until it had done its damage--even though I updated every day and scanned religiously. A few of my friends report similar experiences. A new Avast installation also mysteriously detected some threats on my hard disk that AVG 8 didn't catch. In sum, AVG 8 is a good program, but maybe a little overrated.

he he he.nice one captain and very sensible fella. this is a good one and worth a go. i have had it for a few months now and its by far the best one for system resources as its very light. its realtime shield is good (especially with trojan detection) and non intrusive. it has variable scan settings including an on board scanner for file or folder scans. apart from its virus data base it also has many spyware signatures included, which gives you spyware protection which is integrated into the realtime shield.updates are automatic and daily and the interface is easy to use. overall a good av program and a good choice to make.

AVG 7.5 was poor whereas v8 is such an improvement realtime protection blocked the 2 trojans that AVG 7.5 let install in win/system32 files qa.exe trojans from infected software program that i installed .
