| | | | "An outstanding free antivirus program"
I've been using AntiVir for the past three years now and the program -- even in its earlier incarnations -- has worked magnificently. AntiVir has plenty of configuration options; it automatically updates itself, and it even allows you to set the level of heuristic virus scanning. Don't let my antvirus technobabble scare you away though: AntiVir is very easy for even computer novices to set up and use. In essence, if you're a newbie, just install it and let it do its thing. Personally, I use AntiVir on my computer in conjunction with AVG (another free antivirus program). Together AntiVir and AVG have stopped every virus and trojan that's ever tried to infect my computer. Anyway, if you don't have any antivirus protection on your computer, then -- at the very least -- you really should install this free (for personal use) version of AntiVir. Your computer will love you for it. :) by: CharlieOrlando | 5 | 2006-07-04 | | | | "Didn't say..."
I didn't call it "dumbed down".
The difference between scanning email as it comes in and as you open attachments is that the previous approach prevents malware from getting on your system to begin with. This doesn't matter as much with email, because as you point out, the on-access scanner should catch it when it matters most (provided you haven't temporarily disabled it for some reason). But that doesn't help with HTTP (i.e. malicious web content such as JavaScripts), because the harm with that can occur as it is loaded in your browser's memory--before the on-access scanner can possibly intercept it. by: x | 2 | 2006-06-01 | | | | "Also"
X, they use the same engine, and same defintion files, they don't dumb up the product, just like AVG doesn't, and neither does Avast!, but they have paid programs too.
Unless you want to say that all three of them are dumbed down, don't say this one is. by: Tr0n | 5 | 2006-05-31 | | | | "Dear x"
Avira Antivir is the same as H+BEDV, they merged earlier this year.
And if you read the rest, the scanner kicks in as soon as you open any attachments.
No need to get all offensive. by: Tr0n | 5 | 2006-05-31 | | | | "Start making sense"
Max, I don't understand why you would (sarcastically) ask me which AV is "perfect" and "flawless". It doesn't make sense.
Either what I said is valid, or it is not. If it is not, tell us why. If it is, then I was right to say it.
If your car breaks down every week, and I point out that your car sucks, is it valid for you to demand that I show you a "flawless, perfect" car? No, it doesn't, and my point was a valid one to make. by: x | 2 | 2006-05-28 | | | | "Fair Free Program"
This is a good AV. Manual updates only and if your stuck on modem you can be updating for 30 minutes, yeah its that slow sometimes. I used this since it first came out but use Avast now. AntiVir is definatly better than AVG, Mcafee or anything Norton related. This is a good program for low end machines as well. And for the -x reviewer..I have yet to find a perfect flawless totaly dependable AV program free or pay wise yet. So when you find one please let us know. by: Max | 3 | 2006-05-16 | | | | "Have a grain of salt handy?"
People like "Tr0n" drive me nuts. He happily quotes av-comparatives.org, but unfortunately for him, this product is not evern tested! What they do test is AntiVir PE Premium, not AntiVir PE Classic. One cannot safely assume that the tests for one carry over to the other.
Then he says "don't worry about not having a special module for e-mail scanning". Yeah, sure, OK, and you know ... how much about this topic? In fact, a real-time scanner that monitors the traffic going into your browser and email client is the *ONLY* way to stop malicious content from exploiting some browser and email client vulnerabilities. Scanning files in real time doesn't cut it in that case, because the harm is done as the file is rendered or processed by your browser/client, and before the file exists in a state where the file scanner can do its job.
AntiVir PE Classic lacks a real-time scanner for HTTP and email traffic, which means that scripts and other content going into your browser will not be scanned. Yes, you can and should disable scripting for most sites, but you CANNOT disable it across the board, because so many sites are crippled if you don't enable it for them.
Therefore, Tr0n is wrong, and AntiVir PE Classic should be passed up. by: x | 2 | 2006-05-10 | | | | "One of the top 3 free"
Anti-vir is alright.Has one slight annoyance when you get updates it sends in a ad for it's pay for version. by: Truman | 4 | 2006-05-03 | | | | "1 of 4"
canot say very bad but there's few virus that only avast could detect
there's also AVG which is faster and more convenient while it can stop and continue scanning
if u not satisfied with this av, avast, AVG free, and bit defender free are options by: free av | 5 | 2006-05-02 | | | | "Best free AV on the market"
While Avast has many features that might prove worthy, Avira Antivir simply beats both AVG and Avast in detection, hands down. If you look at av-comparatives.org's February comparison of on-demand detection, Antivir blows AVG and Avast out of the water.
Not only that, they have a better outbreak response. On top of that, the scanner kicks in as soon as you open any attachments, so don't worry about not having a special module for e-mail scanning.
