AVG AntiVirus Free 8.0 is the tops of all protection programs. I've used F-Secure Security Suite, Norton among other. For the price (FREE) you can't beat it. Does what it says and more.

Toadcarter (noob) in defining AVG as a scam.AVG does have an advertising bar yes advertising AVG pro, as free version does not have rootkit detection or firewall these can be easily obtained for free Comodo Firewall and Rootkit Revealer are an excellent substitute for the missing firewall and rootkit detection.
Noob, know little and have no will to learn any more. They expect people to do the work for them and then expect to get praised about it, and make up a unique species of their own. It is the latter we will study in this guide so that the reader is prepared to encounter them in the wild if needed.

I probably would "purchase" but since you mislead and say its free i dont want to do business with a company that trys to scam people by having them think its free then telling them they have to purchase. How can you trust your pc with a cmpany like that ? I have lots of money to spend but only to sites that are not scammers.

Yeah AVG does use a little more memory than version 7.5 because it includes Spyware protection and Linkscanner.AVG found loads of Spyware, 1 trojan 1 worm that AVG 7.5, Windows Defender and Spybot all missed.

I uninstalled this on my three machines. My one machine I reformatted the drive with Xp media. The machine was blazing fast until I installed Avg 8, then it turned into a slug. I switched to avast. Avast runs better ,but lots of false positives. I would suggest sticking to Avg 7.5 .

Avira 71% awarded *** Advanced 71% detection rate although Avira did have a high false positives (flagged/immunized clean files as virus/trojan or other malware)
Avast 40% and AVG 43% awarded
* Standard.
Nod 32 came top and was the only Antivirus awarded *** Advanced plus.

Avira is the best detection for Free Antivirus, but it's bad at repairing file that infected, and lacks of anti spyware feature.
Avast, well, also has false positive, but not many..Avast is good though
AVG? Can't detect viruses, remember that user32.dll deleted by AVG false positive?
I still dunno why peoples always downloading this..LOL

Love AVG linkscanner as it warns of any websites that may contain malware.I have used AVG for about five months now and i did notice AVG detected a few spyware and a one trojan when i installed AVG and ran a full scan after my years licence expired on another AV software program that failed to detect them.

For all those who have the complaint of AVG slowing down their computers, especially browsers, that is because, during installation, you must have checked on LINK SCANNER installation. the best thing to do is, either disable link scanner in avg settings, or re-install avg, and uncheck the link scanner installation, and only install AVG ANTIVIRUS component.
AVG 2008 is by far the best anti-virus program (in freeware category).
