"other guy"
to the other guy that recommended Avira are you barking mad?
You say you recommend avira to help people not make the same mistakes as you!!!
is that why you are recommending an AV that has terrible updates.
i got shot of Avira after waiting a week for a successful update, the other reviews cannot all be wrong.
it has good detection but on the downside it gets a helluva lot wrong, ive never seen so many false positives.
you may also find its detection will fade when it fails to update.
the best all round free AV at the moment is Avast for "all" round performance.
no nag screens,no update failures and low on false positives.

"Best free AV solution"
From the testing of Avira AntiVir Personal, COMODO Internet Security (free), AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, Rising Antivirus 2009 Free, avast! 4.8 Home Edition
Avira AntiVir Personal had the best detection, taking 1st place, followed by avast!, 3rd place COMODO Internet Security, 4th AVG free, and in last place came Rising Antivirus, not because it has such a horrible detection, but because it has serious update problems...
If you're a newbie in search for a free AV solution cause you can't afford a comercial AV or don't want to buy one, then you can download and install Avira AntiVir Personal without needing to have no hesitation.
PS
I have nothing to do with Avira or the guys in Germany that made it, i'm just a heavy internet user, a simple person that likes to test software, and help other not make the mistakes i did. by: Cyber-Tracker | 4 | 2009-10-27 |

"to previous reviewer"
to the previous reviewer..
maybe you should check your facts before you blurt out anymore verbal garbage.
if you checked with avira you would see that the update problem is an issue and avira themselves have acknowledged it.
its been a problem for a few months and as a result their premium users are getting priority over free users.
what good is a anti virus with no updates Einstein?
As a computer tech i can assure you that my pc is in tip top condition.
it makes no difference if its free if it doesent work.
there are better free alternatives that do work properly..

"WTF is wrong people?"
I've been reading complaints about this FREE software. You don't like the pop-ups so what. You only get 1 when you update the program and you can get rid of it anyway with a simple mouse click. Then some of you complain that it won't download updates. That's BS. Try cleaning up your registry and defrag your PC once in a while for chrissakes! - Noobs LOL by: i81b4u | 5 | 2009-10-09 |

"went downhill"
Don't know what has happened to this program as it used to be good.
It took me 20min to download it from avira but installation was straight forward and easy but thats were the positive points kinda run out.!
As previous reviewer said its auto updates simply dont work, at all.
I tried to update it afterward every hour for 9hrs and still couldn't get any updates.
A few people i know who have been avira die hards for years told me this has been a problem for a few months now.
This won't motivate anyone to upgrade to their pro version which leads me onto another problem.
It has one of the worst nag screens i have ever seen which appeared when i finally got an update.
As far as im aware this appears at every update.
however a quick google search for "remove avira nag screen" should see you alright.
It is light on resources and its scanner is still quick but it did create a few false positives which maybe explains why some people think its deadly on detection!
its a shame as this used to be a good program and i did want it to work and keep it on my pc but with crap updates its just too risky.

"Puts the S in POS software"
Refuses to update on Win 7...just sits there. Too bad this rating scale doesn't go lower because a freebie AV without updates is worth a rating of about -10,000. by: Anti-Avira | 1 | 2009-09-29 |

"Excellent"

"The Best Free Antivirus Program"
In my humble opinion and after testing all free antivirus programs Avira AntiVir Personal is the best. It finds everything and is uses hardly any resources. Also it scans much faster than AVG and Avast. You can use it with confidence knowing it will protect your PC. The best by far! by: Blightyboy | 5 | 2009-05-24 |

"Simply the best out there."
I've been using Avira since ages. Never eva in ma lifetime has any virus or spyware managed to infect ma laptop. Ma friend had Mcafee paid version. I advised him to try Avira and guess what? It found a spyware which even a reputed antivirus like Mcafee could'nt detect. So Avira Rockzzzzz. Just download it and forget about it. U never need to do anything else. A small advert pops open every time it updates but I cant complain when its free. And if you dont want that just shell out a mere 12 quids and buy a premium version bloody hell. by: Pravin | 5 | 2009-05-08 |

"So painful to use!"
If it didn't bombard you with URGENT requests every so many days, or built in ads about upgrading to the pro, it MIGHT be considered a good program.

"Update problem"
On a Vista PC, it won't update. Memory usage is bigger than Avast which runs fine on Vista 32 bit & 64 bit. by: madcats | 3 | 2009-03-20 |

"You've tried the rest but here's the BEST!"
Using Avira along with Sygate personal firewall is the only way to go. Of course I use Spybot search and destroy as a backup. Another fine program indeed! by: i81bfu | 5 | 2009-03-18 |
