runs silent in background Cons: well theirs NONE!! Other Thoughts: by far this is what i think this is better then
norten antivirus
and macafee antivirus

"Nice,but.."

Pros: Free anti-virus, options rich, most beautiful interface i have seen, easy to handle, good anti-virus scanner, not using much system resources. Cons: Few missed malware, 3 samples of viruses run in memory - Avast did have problems with removing procedure, computer crashed. One of samples i did use was old old virus. Other Thoughts: Nice basic solution, i recommend to use with some good Firewall/hips -maybe Comodo firewall with proactive detection and few non resident scanners from time to time - Emsisoft (free scanner),Emco malware destroyer (free),SuperAntispyware,MalwareBytes and so on.. "Beware of Win7-64bit corruption"

Pros: I was using Avast on my Win7-x64 system for almost a year with no problems (replaced the original MS Security Essentials first generation). I have used Avast for years on my XP laptop and like it very much. Cons: However, be aware that I performed an in-place upgrade to this new build (using the update function within Avast) on my Win7-x64 laptop and it completed without any errors, rebooted, and then the entire system was hosed, no apps would open, nothing but errors reported in the GUI, Java frozen, the only function that worked was MS update, so the OS was connecting to the Inet but nothing else. Appeared to be a firewall issue (running PC Tools Firewall). I performed a system restore to one-day prior to the Avast update and everything was ok. I used Revo Uninstaller to remove Avast (highly recommend Revo), and installed the lastest 2nd generation build of MS Security Essentials, and I'm back in business. Sorry Avast, on my Win7-x64 laptop, you're in the dumpster with this latest build, and I've left you in the dust. Other Thoughts: Again, on my XP laptop, no problems. I also run Threatfire on my XP laptop (recommend) along with Avast. On my Win7-x64 laptop, the new version of MS Security Essentials takes care of the potential threats as well, so no need for Threatfire. "Annoying interface"

Pros: It's free. Cons: The GUI is very annoying and unneccessarily consuming CPU and memory. After installing, users are immediately annoyed by a voice saying 'Welcome to Avast'. Sounds can be turned off though, but this behaviour during installation already is too obtrusive. And for every little update a huge popup comes up at the right bottom corner of the screen. Pros: Its free, nice interface. Cons: Lesser detection rate when compared to Gdata, Avira Antivir. Does not scan everything by default. Other Thoughts: Avast scanning is very slow. When you perform a complete scan, with all available options checked, a scan takes over 2 hours! In Avast, a full scan is different from a complete scan. Complete means scan everything and every single byte! Some people do not seem to know the difference. "Use to be good but not anymore"

Pros: Pretty good package but... Cons: I have been using and recommend to my folks since ver 4.8 and no problem has ever found until being updated to ver 5.0.677 it keep on crashing, now I hardly convince myself or recommended to anyone unless, they are willing to take the risk; risk of intertuption while downloading. Other Thoughts: To be fair, Avast does the job well; considering its a freeware. It does offer you the most protection in its class however stability is a huge concern !!

Pros: As a driver update product it's fine. Cons: THE AD SAYS "ANTIVIRUS" product. There is nothing antivirus in the software. I wanted an antivirus product.
