"badman11 is a n00b this is a great game (see previous review)"
by: Daboebensen
Starport Galactic Empires

Pros: free players can challenge pay-to-players successfully, the pay items don't skew the game too much. you don't have to spend money to do well in this game running out of fuel sets automatic "sanity" limits on how much you can play (unless you pay) anybody can kill anybody the interface is intuitive and easy to learn and "/help" gets you detailed shortcuts, with a tutorial you can toggle on or off there is a lot of skill involved in fighting, with an aspect of chance, but nukes skew things considerably

Cons: you can run out of fuel (but can generate extra fuel) you can't buy your way to invincibility, so you money may be poorly spent if you suck like badman11

Other Thoughts: badman11 had all kinds of problems running it on XP, but really dude why are you running an OS that's a decade out of date? get a decent computer and run windows 7. you can't expect game makers to keep everything backwards compatible forever.

badman11 was also whining about the pay-to-players, and didn't seem to realize that you can generate fuel and buy or build nukes without spending a dime.

basically, all his bad review revealed was that his computer sucks and he's a n00b.

I do fine without spending any money, for the "rebangs" (time-limit games) I'm consistently in the top-10. if the game was as skewed as badman11 seems to think it is, that would never happen.

"Grindtastic mmo"
by: badman11
Starport Galactic Empires

Pros: fun grinding game lots of online player support game about the player not numbers lots of interesting Sci-fi elements

Cons: warp fuel!!! requires massive grinding to stay on top anybody can kill anybody colony defenses are too weak nukes!!! crashes, loads slow, and won't work on most computers

Other Thoughts: I've played the game for about 2 months now. The game play and graphics are very simplistic, as stated before elsewhere a

budget eVe online. The actual program leaves much to be desired with servers constantly going down for maintenance.

The biggest complaint that I hear from my friends is that they can't get the game to work on their computer. I have

a custom computer with an asus n4l-vm dh motherboard Intel® Core™ Duo processor and 2 gigs of ram and am running

windows xp and it crashes every time I set up a colony or sometimes when I pull into port of land on a colony, which

is very frustrating. I've seen even veteran player's ships freeze up in combat, or get stuck in walls and such. Game

play is smooth. As stated before a very simplistic 2d shooter game that has a feel to it like Galaga almost.
The game is a very open ended story that involves playing taxi to different passengers for fare, forming

corporations, and engaging in building colonies, and trade, and skirmishes between different corps. Alliances are

constantly formed and broken between different players and corporations, and the newbie never really knows where

they stand.
One good and bad thing about the game is that anyone can take down anyone. Rep and title are not a thing, so it is

not a number's game. Of course that is bad too because there are a lot of mooks and trolls that love to load up a

"corpie" flag ship with nukes and troll other players and that can get quite frustrating at times.
The game has a small community that is constantly changing save for a few "veteran" players that are very

standoffish and rude. I got cursed out after invading a colony once by a vet and didn't much care for that. I don't

do the whole beefing-over-a-video-game thing, but this game is definitely polarizing, and some people just take it

too personal.
If anything, the two things that I hate about the game are the warp fuel system, which requires you to spend actual

money to purchase in order to move your ship around, and the way the game mechanics are nerfed in favor of the

pirates and nukes which once again you can buy with real money from star bases throughout the game. It seems that

the strategy that works the best in combat is to close in and hose your opponent with nukes. Also nukes give you an

unfair advantage in taking colonies.
Also a lot of the customization features for the ship do not work at this time, so the option to change out engines

or thrusters is really just a fallacy. The best ships and features are by far the most expensive, meaning that you

will have to spend some time grinding away to be able to afford them, and woe to you if you should run up on the

wrong person during said grind. The penalties in rep, money, and warp fuel (which you have to pay for with real

money) are quite high.
There are two different styles that you can essentially take when playing the game, you can play as a pirate and

raid colonies and kill other players or play as a commissioned officer and build colonies and kill pirates. If you

are wise you are a pirate/invader cause building sucks.Colonies take a long time to pay off. Building is a whole lot

of grind, and colonies can be taken rather easily. Also having no time limit to the game, colonies can be overrun

when you are away. I found to my chagrin that my colonies were almost all being sneaked at 2 in the morning while I

was asleep. Also you are ranked rather unfairly based on the number of actions that you preform , and pirates having

it the easiest in their actions almost always have the highest rank.So in the end the game isn't about who controls

the most colonies, but who controls the colonies the most. I was in a corp that was in the top 50 then got wiped in

one night by a single pirate using nukes.Take from that what you will.
All in all I would say that if you like to grind and don't care about graphics or occasionally dropping $10 bucks

then this is the game for you. But if you are seriously into that sort of thing why not just open a WoW account, or

better still play eVe online, it's a much better game?

"meh"
by: roy

Other Thoughts: this is VERY hard to judge, it's probably both the most thought out and WORST games at the same time, you go around escorting or bring a taxi to earn stuff, you can own colonies which earns money, and also invade said colonies, the problem? THE SERVER RUNS 24/7! you have to create a character for each server, and even if you leave, your space ship and colonies are still there, so youre lucky to keep a colony more than one day, and the worst part? youre restricted by FUEL! the problem? you only get maybe 1 gallon every 3 minutes, and it takes fuel to land, take off, and warp, so even if you play this 24/7 YOULL STILL BE STUCK, LOSING COLONIES AT THE SAME TIME TOO!

"one of the best free mmo's!!!"
by: MadAce

Other Thoughts:  A revelation among mmo's and possibly the best free game around. You'll be stunned and you'll be shocked by the quality.
This is a unique game. Especially among mmo's. Some mmo's claim to be that one game that will get you hooked and will inspire you to go beyond yourself. But StarPort is the real deal.
It started out as a game in which the player would play 2-week matches in a galaxy. A playing field that is rather small at first sight. But not when you try to rule and colonise it. Those 2 week games proved to be a lot of fun and one could see himself setting their alarm clock at 4 AM to change the production of a colony on a captured planet. The micro-management of setting up defences inside your colonies and managing happiness and weapon production of those colonies is nicely compensated by heart pounding, highly strategically and skill-based arcade like combat. The tension grew when the servers came nearer to Rebang dates, as all wanted to be in the top 10 to get their medal and show their worth and show of their skill. Many were won for that game then. Few mmo's offered the spirit of Massive Multiplayer in a setting where you could actually WIN.
In June 2005 the game banged (launched) its first permanent server. A true revolution, even for a revolutionary game like this one.
A whole new side emerged. After the first month Empires began to grow and wars began to light up the galaxy. Fiercer than ever before. With massive alliances... Betrayal... Drama... Emotion...
Empires made by hand were destroyed, recaptured... Truly epic battles were fought.
But not in great numbers. Nay, SGE (StarPort: Galactic Empires) is not a game with many faceless and meaningless players. In SGE everyone has a value.
One person, even untrained, could make a difference in one of those determining battles in one of those wars.
The game evolved after its launch in early 2004. A lot. The developer team, though small has always showed great respect for the community, but still the will to go against them to improve the game to levels even the players couldn't imagine.
These changed show that SGE is a game that constantly changes, not only in the player created world, but also thanks to the developers.
Yes, player-created. The players decide when to go to war or not. Where the borders of the galactic empires are and where they should be crossed in daring campaigns, venturing for riches and glory.
The players, the players, the players. The epicentre of SGE: The Community.
Many of them dedicated to what they know to be a one of a kind game. Many of them nearly in love.
Some even a bit pathetic. But they can live with that.

Take it from me. SGE is a very hard game. It rivals EVE and L2 and Shadowbane in PvP violence. Though EVE has places to run, while SGE has few...
Though L2 has fixed castles where SGE has countless planets waiting to be YOUR castle.
Though Shadowbane has zergs where SGE has raw skill, in either fighting, invasion, building, diplomacy, espionage, manipulation,...
All real skills.
All player made.
All player.
All yours.
If you give it the chance.

Don't give up.
Accept the graphics.
Accept those galaxies, as they will accept your dreams.

Dare, conquer, overcome.

Good luck.

"Possibly the best free mmo, and certainly one of the best mmo's."
by: MadAce

Other Thoughts: I (and many players with me) like the very addictive game play, together with the PvP. Yes, it's hardcore player versus player. Ni it's not a fighting game 100%. It involves a lot of strategy and long-term reflection. You have to plan ahead. And in a way that's not true. There are two types of servers. Perma's (never-ending servers, each of them quite unique) and rebangs (servers that can last up to 18 days, and the highest ranking players are rewarded with a medal, a status symbol) both have similar game play and goals but both are equally accessible.
You can team up in corporations, which is VERY much fun. And you can fight over galactic domination. This isn't like in other mmo's where the devs "create" wars, regions and such to get players to fighting. In SGE you can decide that yourself. And thus an average server is filled with politics and intrigue, wars and strives for power.
You might think that this is a hard-ass community, aiming for the demise of their fellow-players.
Big mistake. The community is one of the most open ones around by far. It's possible to encounter the wrong person, but unlikely. Since MANY people are really willing to help you out as new player. And continue to do that, since there's so much to learn.
It seems a simplistic game, but it isn't. You can get to Galactic domination in a lot of ways.
One other thing: There's a really close contact with the devs. They often listen and they tend to tell why they implement certain changes.

There's a steep learning curve. Although the devs did the effort to implement a tutorial. It's not a kiddie game, be warned.
The community is dedicated, but this brings with it that some players get upset if the devs change some things. Remember, it involves work to build up an Empire. And it's never fun to see your massive creation damaged by outer-game changes. So this tends to get out some rivalry between players. Some that supports the devs and others that question their judgement. But this only shows how much there is to care about this game.

In conclusion... You'd be a fool not to give it a serious try. Warning: Your social life can die because of this game. Soon wars and power will be more addictive than... Food...
