| | Review | Rating | Date | | | "meh" this is VERY hard to judge, it's probably both the most thought out and WORST games at the same time, you go around escorting or bring a taxi to earn stuff, you can own colonies which earns money, and also invade said colonies, the problem? THE SERVER RUNS 24/7! you have to create a character for each server, and even if you leave, your space ship and colonies are still there, so youre lucky to keep a colony more than one day, and the worst part? youre restricted by FUEL! the problem? you only get maybe 1 gallon every 3 minutes, and it takes fuel to land, take off, and warp, so even if you play this 24/7 YOULL STILL BE STUCK, LOSING COLONIES AT THE SAME TIME TOO!
by: roy | 1 | 2008-04-23 | | | | "one of the best free mmo's!!!" A revelation among mmo's and possibly the best free game around. You'll be stunned and you'll be shocked by the quality.
This is a unique game. Especially among mmo's. Some mmo's claim to be that one game that will get you hooked and will inspire you to go beyond yourself. But StarPort is the real deal.
It started out as a game in which the player would play 2-week matches in a galaxy. A playing field that is rather small at first sight. But not when you try to rule and colonise it. Those 2 week games proved to be a lot of fun and one could see himself setting their alarm clock at 4 AM to change the production of a colony on a captured planet. The micro-management of setting up defences inside your colonies and managing happiness and weapon production of those colonies is nicely compensated by heart pounding, highly strategically and skill-based arcade like combat. The tension grew when the servers came nearer to Rebang dates, as all wanted to be in the top 10 to get their medal and show their worth and show of their skill. Many were won for that game then. Few mmo's offered the spirit of Massive Multiplayer in a setting where you could actually WIN.
In June 2005 the game banged (launched) its first permanent server. A true revolution, even for a revolutionary game like this one.
A whole new side emerged. After the first month Empires began to grow and wars began to light up the galaxy. Fiercer than ever before. With massive alliances... Betrayal... Drama... Emotion...
Empires made by hand were destroyed, recaptured... Truly epic battles were fought.
But not in great numbers. Nay, SGE (StarPort: Galactic Empires) is not a game with many faceless and meaningless players. In SGE everyone has a value.
One person, even untrained, could make a difference in one of those determining battles in one of those wars.
The game evolved after its launch in early 2004. A lot. The developer team, though small has always showed great respect for the community, but still the will to go against them to improve the game to levels even the players couldn't imagine.
These changed show that SGE is a game that constantly changes, not only in the player created world, but also thanks to the developers.
Yes, player-created. The players decide when to go to war or not. Where the borders of the galactic empires are and where they should be crossed in daring campaigns, venturing for riches and glory.
The players, the players, the players. The epicentre of SGE: The Community.
Many of them dedicated to what they know to be a one of a kind game. Many of them nearly in love.
Some even a bit pathetic. But they can live with that.
Take it from me. SGE is a very hard game. It rivals EVE and L2 and Shadowbane in PvP violence. Though EVE has places to run, while SGE has few...
Though L2 has fixed castles where SGE has countless planets waiting to be YOUR castle.
Though Shadowbane has zergs where SGE has raw skill, in either fighting, invasion, building, diplomacy, espionage, manipulation,...
All real skills.
All player made.
All player.
All yours.
If you give it the chance.
Don't give up.
Accept the graphics.
Accept those galaxies, as they will accept your dreams.
Dare, conquer, overcome.
Good luck.

The only problem is that you run out of fuel too quick.

by: spoiler | 1 | 2006-09-05 | | | | "superb" This is a once-in a lifetime experience. Rarely you'll see a game, so simple to learn, so hard to master. With so many facets and so many interesting people. A work of art for all who have the courage to try it.
by: MadAce | 5 | 2006-07-06 | | | | "dont buy into the admiral tokens" I got scammed by the GM Toonces, out of $27.00 of admiral tokens when they released a bad patch. He play it off as "I Don't care"

by: Beamrider | 5 | 2006-04-01 | | | | "Possibly the best free mmo, and certainly one of the best mmo's." I (and many players with me) like the very addictive game play, together with the PvP. Yes, it's hardcore player versus player. Ni it's not a fighting game 100%. It involves a lot of strategy and long-term reflection. You have to plan ahead. And in a way that's not true. There are two types of servers. Perma's (never-ending servers, each of them quite unique) and rebangs (servers that can last up to 18 days, and the highest ranking players are rewarded with a medal, a status symbol) both have similar game play and goals but both are equally accessible.
You can team up in corporations, which is VERY much fun. And you can fight over galactic domination. This isn't like in other mmo's where the devs "create" wars, regions and such to get players to fighting. In SGE you can decide that yourself. And thus an average server is filled with politics and intrigue, wars and strives for power.
You might think that this is a hard-ass community, aiming for the demise of their fellow-players.
Big mistake. The community is one of the most open ones around by far. It's possible to encounter the wrong person, but unlikely. Since MANY people are really willing to help you out as new player. And continue to do that, since there's so much to learn.
It seems a simplistic game, but it isn't. You can get to Galactic domination in a lot of ways.
One other thing: There's a really close contact with the devs. They often listen and they tend to tell why they implement certain changes.
There's a steep learning curve. Although the devs did the effort to implement a tutorial. It's not a kiddie game, be warned.
The community is dedicated, but this brings with it that some players get upset if the devs change some things. Remember, it involves work to build up an Empire. And it's never fun to see your massive creation damaged by outer-game changes. So this tends to get out some rivalry between players. Some that supports the devs and others that question their judgement. But this only shows how much there is to care about this game.
In conclusion... You'd be a fool not to give it a serious try. Warning: Your social life can die because of this game. Soon wars and power will be more addictive than... Food...
