"Mixed Reviews, Irritations"
by: Anonymous Smith

Other Thoughts: It's really irratating when websites redirect to other sites based on server domain. I'm an American working temporarily in Germany. When I attempt to access the Skype USA website, I'm instantly redirected to the German website. Of course, I don't speak German. And, because of that, it took several minutes to find an option on that website to select another language or website. Others will face the exact same situation while traveling overseas for either business or pleasure.

Do the developers of these websites (which redirect) think we're too stupid to select the website we want? Most Europeans seem smart enough to select the website within their own country. Gee, for Germans, it's the one in German. If they choose not to, there's often a valid reason. Regardless, there are many millions, like myself, temporarily living and working in countries where the local language is not our own native languages. We need to be able to easily select websites within our own countries, which this redirect nonsense hinders.

Anyway, the Skype service is certainly extremely handy for those of us living overseas. Lacking more info, I decided not to update to this latest version until it's been out for a while (too many mixed reviews, bug reports, etc).

"Version?"
by: Nigel

Other Thoughts: Why is 4.2.0.166 the latest version when I already have 4.2.3.163 installed?

"Blue Screen"
by: kashiko

Other Thoughts: On XP this version gives me a blue screen of death. I've gone back to the version before and no problems. from Japan to England it's great.

"Eats my RAM"
by: Pink Skirt On Fire

Other Thoughts: It eats a lot or RAM. If you want to have more control over Skype writing cripple files to your system, use the portable version. Then you have everything in one folder and can delete the whole crap if no longer needed. Especially useful if you are tired of looking for your profile folder and cleaning out your call & chat history. Portable version here:

"Good, but not there yet."
by: wirelessCFO

Other Thoughts: 24 OCT 2008

I am having problems with SKYPE's sound not working properly with my VISTA Home Edition.

For the time being I have put SKYPE 3.x back on. I will try the next Beta Edition to see if it works properly.

"Good, but a bit obtrusive"
by: Dr. Moese

Other Thoughts: It's a useful and nice looking software. However, I don't like it when a software is so obtrusive. Right after installation it starts Skype without asking the user. This is impertinent!

"Brilliant!"
by: Aus1

Other Thoughts: Skype 3 is the best version of skype yet. Bloatware? I agree file size is getting quite large, but you can use UPX to reduce the file size to 10Mb. This is not bloatware, it's not adware, it's a great tool. My business operates in 5 locations around australia, and by using skype and it's very friendly interface, we have cut our phone bills dramatically. Other programs were tried, but failed to live up to expectations. As soon as 3 became public, we started using that, and never looked back.

Skype-in is something that our company has found incredibly useful - now each staff member can have their own phone number for external calls in whilst they are at work, and, voicemail when they're not. Great work skype, keep it up - maybe just reduce the file size before release but either way UPX makes it reasonable size for me.

"Bloatware"
by: Dave

Other Thoughts: Sorry mate! I am a user not competitor. I would not install Skype 3, use 2.5 Beta instead if you can find it!

"Bloatware myth"
by: aaa

Other Thoughts: the bloatware myth is being spread
by Skypes competitors

(You know the same guys who spam skype forums and peoples blogs and message boards)

I'm using this on a PIII-650 laptop with 128MB RAM and runs smoooth as glass even with XP Pro
which my laptop is barely qualified to even run.

No Adware
No spyware

Yes some of the plugins are not
free but for every one that costs $$$ there is a free one available.

Skype does not attempt to force you to use paid plugins.

128 Million registered users
and an average of 4+ million
online at any given time on Skype
the competition is forced to act
like idiots making up bullsh*t lies and resorting to spam
to get customers (Whom they generaly rip off and give poor service to)

Skype 3 is great and runs even on
older systems with a bare amount of ram.
