| | | | "Remains the Number One Editor of Freewares" by: Trefayne VirtualDub 1.9.10 Stable
Pros: User-friendly look, menus and editing options.
Lot of impressive plugins for editing videos in the best way available (sharpness, noise removing, brightness, contrast, etc.).
Can burn subtitles, watermarks on videos.
Good and understandable manual and help files.
No need for installers, you may just extract to a folder and then just start.
Error messages database available on internet.
Recommended for any beginners.
Cons: Crashes because of some external codecs.
Stability is not always perfect.
Only a few editing options are still not understandable easily. Other Thoughts: Far the best available video editing software of freewares.
I use it together with Avidemux, they can be used cooperatively (what VirtualDub cannot do, Avidemux will do and contra)Was this review helpful? 45 out of 102 users found this review helpful.

Other Thoughts: Have been using VirtualDub for many years now. It's still a great tool, although the GUI is still ugly ;-) I use it together with Avidemux. Some things I do with this tool, other things I do with that tool. Was this review helpful? 53 out of 98 users found this review helpful.

Other Thoughts: Excellent become even better! New versions can use specialy designed input plugins so now VD can open MPEG2, WMV, MP4, FLV and there is DirectShow input plugin which can open anything that your WMP can play. Plus, it can read AVS scripts. Plus, it can frameserve to other applications (if those support VDF as input). Plus, TV capture. Plus, a lot of filters for video and audio processing. Plus, plus, plus...Was this review helpful? 54 out of 95 users found this review helpful.

Other Thoughts: This is the best program around for working with mpg and avi files. If u r looking for a zillion other formats then I would suggest spending some money on specific programs that meet your long list of needs. Every website on the planet allows uploads of an AVI file.
Virtual Dub will do many things if u take a little time to practice. There is a multitude of tutorials on the Internet that will take u step by step. Many thanks to the author who continues to update and offer the software for free. Was this review helpful? 50 out of 110 users found this review helpful.

Other Thoughts: This program is really easy to use.
The main faults I have with it are this.
Use a program like KM Player & if you right-click/quick capture/video, you will notice that the parts you cut out are about the same size as the movie.
It doesn't "re-encode" them to bigger sized or cause it to lose any quality, but seems to capture it just like it is. So if you cut something out, it is actually SMALLER like it should be.
Now, the main problem with this program is this. Some people use avi, but the support the program needs to have is the ones that the majority of the people use.
Don't go all out & try to support them all, but just like all major pic apps support .jpg, .bmp, .png, .tiff for example, this program would be a gem if it supported at LEAST all flavors of mpg including mpg 1, 2, 3 (audio), & 4.
In addition, needs support for .mov, .rm, .ram, .divx.
Now, the last feature missing is the ability to save a video in reverse. Because sometimes you need to reverse a video.
Would also be nice to be able to use this program not just to split movies, but to join them as well.... convert & join if they are diff.
Don't ask about DVD format, because if it supports mpg2, that is the format DVD encoders use, although newer ones may use mp4 or higher.
Overall, great tool for what it does.
Improving the support to at least the 4 or 5 most common vid formats would really make the program a fav in all people's toolboxes, however.
Many thanks to the author for his hardwork & dedication. Was this review helpful? 59 out of 107 users found this review helpful.

Other Thoughts: When I tried to screen capture this program crashed, and forever afterwards crashed when I tried to capture any video as I couldn't get out of screen capture mode before it crashed. They need to sort that out.Was this review helpful? 52 out of 100 users found this review helpful.

Other Thoughts: At beginning I an wondering what a several hundred kilobytes program can do. The result is that it is as powerful as the 10M counterpart. If there is something need to improve, a detailed help for how to use it --- I spent 2 hours to find and read tutorials online before I have it work. But once it works it works well. Maybe the author could improve the interface to make it more attractive at the first glance. And if the preview window can be resized to fit the window that is good, because when I resize a video the output preview pane is out of the border of monitor and I found no way to bring it in. Anyway, once you learned how to use it, you can consider uninstall lots of sharewares from your system. Was this review helpful? 44 out of 95 users found this review helpful.
