"Dificult to use"
by: uprichukalaa
DivXLand Media Subtitler 2.07

Pros: easy GUI, pretty easy to find out what you need to do. it is free. if i can make it work, it will be the best freeware around

Cons: too many dependencies just like another user said. have been trying to add a subtitle to a 5 minute video. it has been more than 3 hours. still haven't given up hope. i am still trying. the first review is something you really need to read before trying this software

Other Thoughts: None

"DIFFICULT, BUT EFFECTIVE"
by: TRM

Other Thoughts: This software requires another one, "VirtualDub" in order to

work. In addition to that, it needs a special 'filter' for

applying the subtitles to an AVI file (It ONLY supports AVI).

To unzip the packages, you need "7-Zip", a special zip utility

with it's own proprietary format, though other unzip programs

will work. After I installed the "Filter", I needed the

"Encoder". One site had only the source files, but not the

actual files. The next one had the files I needed. Google

"xvid encoder download" to find it. After that, it needs

"VirtualDub", still another program, for it to work. So far,

I've been 'installing' this thing for about two hours. After

that, I tested it and found that it did indeed embed subtitles

in a short video clip, but it only did so after a bit of trials,

and I'm not sure exactly what I did to make it work.

In short, this is a dificult-to-use-and-difficult-to-install

sostware.

If you REALLY want to embed captions or subtitles, and you don't

mind working only in AVI, then go ahead and use this.

It doesn't require any special video skills, but it will put

your computer know-how to the test.

It has too many dependencies, and too many 3rd party

requirements.

Oh, yes ... It also needs Windows Media player, version 10 or

11 (I think). Good luck.

"Needs Special Format"
by: TRM

Other Thoughts: You have to use a format for your text files called "Substation Alpha (SSA)" I've never heard of this before, but it's listed with a number of other formats (all of them unknown to me), so I suppose it's a professional's tool, requiring advanced knowledge of computer video editing.
