"I switched to FreeFileSync" by: Henry
Other Thoughts: The problems of Syncback as presented earlier in this forum do not seem to catch any attention. I have been using Syncback for years despite these shortcomings, but not any more, until I discovered FreeFileSync, which is available also in freewarefiles.com. The latter has solved all the problems which I encountered in SyncBack: 1)SyncBack does not support Unicode filenames, 2)SyncBack is not portable. Was this review helpful? 33 out of 65 users found this review helpful.

"Not FreeFileSync" by: Eddie
Other Thoughts: This program was used as was many other sync programs. Then I found FreeFileSync. FFS will not skip files, gives great pre and post sync reports and in version 3.3, is fully portable. If you want a 'real' (and really the ONLY) sync program, get FreeFileSync. Was this review helpful? 22 out of 50 users found this review helpful.

"looking for portability" by: Henry
Other Thoughts: This program is great and I enjoy using. However, I am looking for portability, i.e. I carry this program on a thumb and hope to backup data from my thumb to whichever host I plug in. Was this review helpful? 25 out of 47 users found this review helpful.

"Drive Letter Idea" by: Melaney
Other Thoughts: Assigning a new drive letter to the removable drive should set that drive letter permanently in Windows memory for the next time you attach it. (Windows 2000 and up.)
For Noobies, Right click on My Computer, select Manage. In the window that comes up scroll down to Disk Management. Right click the USB drive you want to change and choose Change Drive Letter. Change it and click YES to the warning that comes up. Your done. It will remember you next time. (You may have to remove and reinsert the drive to see the files in Windows.)
I also found this little free program which will assign static drives letters to usb drives among other things. Lookup USBDLM V4.4.1 - USB Drive Letter Manager for Windows. (No link for fear of this post being deleted.)
3 stars for neutral because I haven't tried syncBack yet.Was this review helpful? 25 out of 48 users found this review helpful.

"You lost me Antonio!" by: deebee
Other Thoughts: Well Antonio,I must admit I don't have a clue what you're talking about with drive serial numbers etc., All I know is that myself & hundreds of thousands of others have been using SyncBack freeware for years to successfully back up to partitions & all external targets i.e. DVD,flash drives & ext HDD's with no problem. Maybe you should ask the developers at 2BrightSparks why you can't seem to get it to work,I'm sure they'd be interested in your comments, then again,as I said previously,I don't know what backup software will work for you!Was this review helpful? 29 out of 66 users found this review helpful.

"Should use serial #, not drive letter" by: justme
Other Thoughts: deebee, I think your reasoning is flawed. Drive letters are flawed for backup/restore use. The app should use drive serial #s in combo with volume names if need be, not drive letters. Was this review helpful? 28 out of 54 users found this review helpful.

"Antonio's review" by: deebee
Other Thoughts: I have used Syncback for years to backup to external hard drives & seperate partitions & never had any problems. If you set up a profile for your external drive, hdd or any other drive for that matter, then disconnect it & reconnect after you've plugged in a flash drive for example, then most likely the drive letter for the external hdd will have changed the next time you connect it,therefore the profile won't work anymore,it's not "corrupted". By the way, this applies to ANY backup program, not just Syncback. It's up to you Antonio to make sure you allocate the proper drive letter to your devices. You have marked Syncback as only meriting a "1" when it's your own fault that it's not working. Look at the path you set up in the profile, then check what drive letter is being allocated to the external hdd. Try Karens Replicator, also very good & I bet you get the same problem. You MUST allocate drive letters to specific drives & keep them that way, else no backup program can work, can it?Was this review helpful? 30 out of 51 users found this review helpful.

"Backup Profiles autoCorrupt!" by: Antonio
Other Thoughts: Several Profiles were created, Backing up Files from computer to external HD. Tedious to do properly, to be sure. Well...the Backup WAS done, but...subsequently, after disconnecting the External HD (I think that's what caused the error) none of the Profile's Groups worked!! WTF??
Something about the way Syncback "stores" it's Profile, and the subsequent Folder Paths, that "corrupts" AFTER the initial Backup.
It might look OK, but...try as I, with a separate HD, and see if I'm wrong. Uninstalled :-(Was this review helpful? 23 out of 52 users found this review helpful.

"Minor glitch, otherwise... it delivers!" by: Wagner
Other Thoughts: Very nice tool, easy to configure once you get the hang of it. Only issue I found is that it's not properly retrying the operation with locked files - it's not giving me the chance to close the application that is using the file, resulting in an error. Was this review helpful? 38 out of 66 users found this review helpful.

"problem with non-English filenames" by: Henda
Other Thoughts: First, I wish viewers to disregard comments that are before 2007 because those are comments about old versions of SyncBack.
Second, I wish to report some bugs in SyncBack 3.2.14:
1. Trouble may occur (but not always) if your folder name or filename is not English. When copied, the destination file could get a mutilated filename.
2. If you choose an FTP server as destination, the problem stated in 1. above occurs more often. It is not safe using FTP as destination. Using drive letters has less trouble.
