Competitive games seem to be taking over the world these days. Some of this, of course, has to do with the rising popularity of e-Sports. There's also an undeniable thirst for competition among gamers, with dozens of genres splintering off to cater to different tastes.

Highly competitive team games do seem to be the flavor of the month, though there are at least a few developers trying to do something different with that basic model. One game that makes a valiant attempt of forging its own path is Battlerite, a team-based competitive game that definitely earns its stripes as an action-packed game.

Fight in Team-based Action-packed Games

Battlerite is best described as a top-down arena shooter/brawler. That's a mouthful, and it's really the only way to describe the game. It isn't a MOBA, though it can feel a lot like that genre. It's also not an arena shooter, though it borrows heavily from that genre. Instead, it's a game where you pick one of many differently-powered champions and fight in team-based games. It riffs on the same game elements as the successful Bloodline Champions, with just enough changed to survive an inevitable copyright problem.

Fun, Competitive, Skill-based Game Play

When the game is good, it's great. It is one of the more skill-based PVP games out there, unbalanced champions aside. If you're good at the game, you are going to win more often than you lose. When you do lose, it will usually be because you got outplayed. In an era of cheap champions and overly-specialized players, this can be a real relief. Combined with an art style that really is charming and some precise controls, you get a competitive game that is great for players who really want to test their skills. It's not the best competitive game out there, but it is a ton of fun.

Huge Skill Curve for New Players

There's plenty of problems with this game, though. As a PVP focused game, it's always going to live or die by its community - and unfortunately, that community is small. It's not so small that you'll have trouble finding games, but it's small enough that the skill curve is huge. You will be immediately thrust into games with people who will destroy you and the only way to move forward is to learn in defeat. This can be discouraging for new players and definitely scares off many. It's also something that cannot be easily fixed by the developers.

Great Game to Try if You Enjoy Competitive Games

Battlerite isn't for everyone, and that's okay. It is a good, if not great, game that will appeal to enough of an audience to keep it going. It's never going to be the flavor of the month and it certainly won't ever light up the most-played charts, but it will always have a good core of players who will enjoy the game. It's worth a play if you enjoy highly competitive games or you feel the need to scratch the twitch itch, but it's otherwise going to be hit or miss for most players. All in all, though, it's exactly what it advertises itself as being.
