Multi-method screen capture program

Download your choice of the installable or portable version of Captura, and launch the screenshot and video capture application. The easy to navigate user interface displays Main, Recent, Configure and About icons in a panel at left and, upon opening, defaults to the Main window. Video recording stop, start and duration, and quick access tool icons are located at the top of the interface.

Video selections for source, including a Preview button, and encoding are provided in the top part of the window enabling selection of screen, window or screen area to record, etc., and output format selection (MP4, AVI, etc.) frame rate and quality.

Audio (microphone input or speaker output) and Webcam options which include a preview button, as well as Screenshot settings are located in the bottom half of the window. You can select an output folder location at the bottom of the window.

Configure the settings to meet a range of requirements

The Configure window provides a drop-down language menu and settings for video delay and capture duration and various checkboxes for customization. An Overlays button opens a window for access to Keystrokes, Mouse and Webcam settings and a Preview window. You can select shape, padding, colors and add text and images.

A Configure button brings up a new window with Proxy, Sounds, Hotkeys, Tray Icon, File Naming, ScreenShot and FFmpeg tabs in a left-hand panel. File Naming provides date and time settings, file name format and output folder location. Hotkeys can be checked for starting and stopping recording, pause and resume, and for a screenshot, screenshot active window or entire desktop. The FFmpeg allows you to select streaming keys and configure codecs.

The screen capture program can be set to minimize at the start in the Configure window so that, always ready for use, the screen capture program can be activated using the hotkeys. Clicking the system tray icon will bring up recording and the specific screenshot buttons.

Captura is a useful utility for capturing screenshots and video. The editing tools enable a capacity for creating comprehensive training and teaching videos and other presentation materials as well as high-quality screenshots. It is open-source and compatible with Windows 7, 8 and 10 and requires .NET 4.7.2 or above.

USER REVIEWS

"Good visuals, terrible sound"

Pros: 1. Good range of settings to customise recording quality. 2. Reliable, good-quality recording of video stream.

Cons: Cannot record a coherent soundtrack on any combination of settings - stutters uncontrollably after about the first second, though video continues to record successfully. Recording 600x300 video stream from Firefox on Samsung NP350 under Windows 7x32.

Other Thoughts: The interface takes a little exploring to get used to the settings options, and then some experimenting to identify the most suitable settings for any particular context; it's an attractive and straightforward piece of software, if only the audio problem can be solved!
