Sometimes, it's fun to look at a property that's a bit outside the realm of the normal. While there are dozens of games that try to ape one another's styles out there, a few go all-out to do things on their own. While they're not always successful, many of these games do hold a special place in the heart of players. One such game, ExZeus2, definitely marches to the beat of its own drummer. It's not a perfect game by any stretch of the imagination, but you have to appreciate the fact that it really seems like it wants to be unique.

Good Mix of Old and New

ExZeus2 is a rail shooter, which is a genre that went out style roughly around the same time as arcades. There have been a few rail shooters that have made attempts at comebacks here or there, but those that don't have a StarFox logo on the front have tended to be quickly forgotten. It's not a bad genre, though - it prioritizes quick reflexes over situational awareness and it gives a great deal of fun back to those shooter fans who aren't that great at manuevering in three dimensions. It's nice to see anyone trying to bring this genre back to life.

When ExZeus2 is at its best, it's actually very good. The shooting is tuned particularly well and the ground combat is at least something unique. The sound design is nice, which is something you don't always get to say about free to play games. It's also nice to see a designer remember to put some modern touches into what's supposed to be a retro-style game. XBOX controller support is great, as is the ability to level up your character as you play. It's a good mix of the old and the new, and it should satisfy anyone who is looking to get into the genre.

It's hard to say that this game every gets truly bad. There's nothing about it that fails - but there's a lot that makes it mediocre. It could look at lot better, even for a free to play game. The game's also repetitive and most of the design elements could use a lot of work. Nothing ever looks bad or broken, but a lot of things look like they could use another pass. When you start to dig too deeply into the game, you'll start to remember why this genre never really took off.

Is ExZeus2 worth playing? It's free, so it's not going to hurt you to try it. It's not a game that you're going to fall in love with, but it's also not a game that you are going to hate. It's inoffensive and good for a few minutes' fun. Most players aren't going to come back to it for a second pass, which is probably a shame. There's fun to be had in the game as long as you don't get your expectations too high. It's a good reminder that there's a lot of room for game releases that aren't intended to be AAA blockbusters.
