HDD Guardian is a free hard drive monitor that makes it easy for all computer users to handle smartctl, a command line utility that controls Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology or S.M.A.R.T., which is built into modern hard drives. Only advanced computer users know how to operate command line applications, but HDD Guardian gives smartctl a graphical user interface for easier access and operation.

People generally focus on software when thinking about the smooth-running of their computers. However, ensuring that hardware components run well is an important part of maintaining the overall health of any system. HDD Guardian provides timely alerts about impending failures, allowing users to take necessary precautions, such as backing up their data.

Using HDD Guardian

Installing HDD Guardian was straightforward and fast, and the installer gave us the opportunity to run the application immediately.

The free hard drive monitor features a simple and intuitive interface that makes it easy to view details and perform required actions. It allowed us to readily see the current health status of our system, including temperature. It also displayed any errors and warnings detected in the previous check.

Apart from providing warnings, the Overview tab gave us comprehensive details about our hard drive, including its capacity, manufacturer, device model, serial number, firmware, working time and reliability.

The Manage tab gave us even more details separated into different sections. Under Informations, we got more details about our hard drive, including device world wide name, sector size, rotation rate, ATA version, interface and S.M.A.R.T. status.

Information is under the Main section, which also includes Device health, S.M.A.R.T. attributes, events log and Events chart. The Setup section allowed us to make some adjustments under S.M.A.R.T. setup, Advanced Acoustic Management, Advanced Power Management, Standby (spindown) timer and Read/write options.

We performed various tests under the Errors and tests section, such as offline data collection, short self-test, extended self-test and conveyance self test. The last section under the Manage tab was Smartctl, which included device output, attributes format and firmware debug. The System tab provides summary information about a computer and hard drive(s).

We could make a number of configurations on how we wanted HDD Guardian to operate. For example, we could set the program to run with Windows and monitor both connection and disconnection of USB devices. We could also select what we wanted it to monitor and the warnings we wanted to receive.

HDD Guardian allows users to take advantage of the S.M.A.R.T. systems included in their hard drives to monitor the state of their hardware and make necessary adjustments for optimum performance.
