Ensure that microcode for your Intel-based motherboard is updated

The Intel Microcode Boot Loader is a microcode updater that will continuously protect your system's motherboard from recently discovered hardware vulnerabilities. Chief among these are two, known as Meltdown and Spectre which, in different ways, allow applications access to the memory locations on the system.

The need for a microcode updater is especially imperative for older computers for which manufacturers do not provide updates. The Intel Microcode Boot Loader is based on BITS, the Intel BIOS Implementation Test Suite and works from a FAT32 formatted USB flash drive which you keep plugged in.

  • Download and extract the utility to a USB flash drive formatted with the FAT32 file system.
  • Make the drive bootable by running install.exe.
  • Go into the BIOS (UEFI if your machine is recent enough to be so equipped) and set the USB flash drive to be your 1st boot device, enabling legacy boot mode.
  • Every time you boot the system The Boot Loader updates the microcode before Windows is loaded.

Manufacturers tend to stop providing BIOS/UEFI updates, once software stability has been ensured, which means that if you are using an older PC, you very likely have not received the security patches required for protection from such vulnerabilities as Spectre and Meltdown. The Intel Microcode Boot Loader microcode updater solves the problem for you and keeps your system safe. Intel Ucodes for 392 CPUs manufactured 1996 to date are included in the download and the utility is compatible with all recent versions of the Windows OS.
