IrfanView Portable, as its name clearly indicates, is the portable version of the popular IrfanView free image viewer. This gives users who do not like installing many applications on their systems the opportunity to use the viewer without compromising their principles. You can run it from any storage device, including flash drives and optical discs.

Using IrfanView Portable

We downloaded and extracted the executable file on an external device so we could easily use it on multiple computers. When we launched the program, it displayed a window that reminded us more of an image editor, as it featured several drawing tools on the right side in addition to the menu functions located on the upper part of the interface.

When we opened an image, the free image viewer displayed it on the view pane covering most of the interface, with its details appearing at the bottom of the window. The details included image size, the percentage of the currently displayed size and its creation or modification date.

The program allowed us to open more than one image at a time, in which case it also displayed the position of the currently displayed image on the upper part of the window. From the File menu, we could show the image thumbnails or start a slideshow with the current file list among other things. We had the option to configure different slide adjustment properties.

We could also open images as HEX, ASCII or RAW files. We could move, copy, rename or save the images in different formats.

The Edit menu allowed us to perform many things, including showing fixed or selection grid, cropping selection and inserting text or watermark image. Unlike many image editors that only cut a selection, the program allowed us to cut the area outside of the selection.

We adjusted images from the Image menu, from where we found that the program also functions as a free image resizer. In addition to resizing an image, we had the option to change the size of the canvas too.

IrfanView Portable supports several plug-ins to extend its functionality. Depending on the plug-in installed, for example, we could use the OCR feature, create multipage PDFs or send files by e-mail.

The free image viewer gave us many viewing options, including showing or hiding caption, menu bar, toolbar and status bar. The window mode of displaying images gave us many options, such as fitting window to image or vice versa, using re-sample for fitting or zooming and doing away with any fitting.

IrfanView Portable is a free image resizer that supports batch conversions for faster performance. You can set resize and crop properties for all files and specify your preferred save options. The program supports many image formats, and it can even handle audio and video files depending on the installed plug-ins.

Pros: Add text to pix, change pix to icon, make a running show for Conventions from pictures to play unattended, put pix side by side or top to bottom, change colors on picture, rubber stamp stealing from one section of picture to put in another (take out beer cans), limitless features.

Cons: No real cons except the features are lost in menus. You need a 6 hours video course to learn them all.

Other Thoughts: Irfan is his real name, a real person you can write to.
