Try your hand at programming your LEGO EV3 robots.

Free LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Software provides an easy-to-use programming interface featuring drag-and-drop icons that allow you to make your robot do exactly what you want it to do.

Download and install the software on your PC and learn to control sound and movement using icons to program the EV3 P-brick - the programmable brick that is your robot's control center - with a USB connection. Learning to program your LEGO EV3 robot is easy. You just fit blocks together as opposed to writing code.

The interface consists of a work area, a toolbar, a P-brick control panel and five sets of color-coded blocks in a toolbox at the bottom of the screen:

  • Green Action Blocks control the motor actions such as steering, sound, and light.
  • Orange Flow Blocks control the flow or order of the program
  • Yellow Sensor Blocks read the color, touch, and other sensor inputs
  • Red Data Operation Blocks allow you to compare values, write and read variables, etc.
  • Blue Advanced Blocks are for managing files and connections

Getting started

The Flow module start block is located in the work area by default when you start the program, and you plug the various blocks you're using into it. Connect your computer to the P-brick on the robot, and you're ready to create a program and download it to the P-brick.

An online video tutorial from LEGO will get you started by visually demonstrating the basics such as how to set speed and timing using the various buttons on the blocks, and then downloading your resulting program to the P-brick. From there you can run it and see your robot come to life. There are individual LEGO video tutorials to take you through the various basic programming functions to add sounds, movement and sensor controls to the P-brick.

Application enhancements

You can download firmware upgrades, and the application gives you the capability of editing sounds for the audio blocks. You can also import and export blocks, and access a memory browser.

System requirements

LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Software requires Windows 7 and up, 2 GB minimum RAM, 2GB disc space, dual processor 2.0 GHz or better, XGA display and a USB port.

Downloading LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 to program the LEGO EV robots you build will give you some insight into the fascinating world of robotics in a very user-friendly environment without having to tackle the mysteries of writing code. The drag-and-drop blocks make learning programming fundamentals easy to understand and, if you do run into problems, the LEGO website provides you with lots of support options. You'll have fun when you program your LEGO EV3 robot and gain an understanding of robotics at the same time.
