Whether you are just starting out in the blogging field or want to expand your horizons, Open Live Writer is an ideal program for you. The open source software supports different blog platforms, and you can easily use it to create and customize your blog posts to suit the targeted platform. The free blog editor allows you to compose your posts offline and post them when you are done.

Using Open Live Writer

When we launched the blog editor, we were first required to choose the blog service we were using. We could choose among WordPress, SharePoint, Movable Type, Blogger, TypePad and DasBlog among others. The software then opened another window where we entered our blog address, username and password. If you are using a personal computer, you can let the program remember your password.

The program started setting up our account when we clicked the 'Next' button. We then entered a nickname for our blog and clicked the 'Finish' button to save the blog.

Open Live Writer's main interface was similar to many modern text or word editors like Microsoft Office, with the menus arranged in ribbon style. We formatted font and paragraphs in the familiar way, and we easily inserted hyperlinks, emoticons, pictures and videos. We had the option to use multimedia files stored locally, on the web or from a video service. Checking word count was as easy as clicking the button on the upper right part of the user interface.

However, the software had additional features that differentiated it from the popular word editors. We could select the required blog if we had set up more than one account, set categories, tags and post date. From the lower left corner of the interface, we could choose the view we wanted, whether we wanted to display the Edit, Preview or Source window. We could even preview multimedia files before inserting them into our post.

The program included a map feature where we could enter our desired location and choose the view we wanted, whether bird's eye, road or aerial view.

The 'Blog Account' tab allowed us to configure our blog in different ways, including entering its description, managing comments, choosing theme and setting various blog options. We could also view our blog site.

When we were still working on a blog post, we had the option of saving it on our computer, posting it as a draft to our blog or posting the draft and opening a web browser to edit it online.

Conclusion

Open Live Writer makes it easy and convenient to publish blog posts. You can work on your draft to your satisfaction offline before sending it to your blog. It also allows you to save the draft and continue with it at another time from a different location. You do not have to regret posting something you did not want to.
