Software Product Description

RichEdit is a free text editor that supports plain text, Unicode, and Rich Text Format (RTF). The program features an intuitive interface that allows you to easily open, edit, save, or create new files.

In addition to the basic functions found in most text editors, RichEdit also features useful advanced functions, a tabbed interface for editing multiple files simultaneously, and includes a handy source code editor that supports several programming languages.

Requires: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.

Pros: Only two: 1) It's free and 2) it's portable.

Cons: There are too many cons in this package to list them all, but here are four of them: 1) RichEdit is very slow to start up. 2) Neither RichEdit nor the included "Mini SC Edit" remember the window position, only the window size, so each time they are started nearly half of the window comes up shifted way off the screen. 3) The main program offers no option for setting a default font. What's more, Mini SC Edit uses a tiny courier font, and there's no way to change that, even for the current session, so you have to resort to the zoom control. 4) The main RichEdit program uses RTF as its default file open format, and Mini SC Edit uses XML. There's no option to change those defaults, either.

Other Thoughts: RichEdit is very awkward and inconvenient to use, and probably the worst text editor I've ever tried, but I guess I should have expected that from a .NET app.
