If you want a better image editor than Microsoft Paint but are not ready to invest in an expensive program, then consider using RealWorld Paint. You can use the free image editor to either edit existing images or create new ones from scratch. Although the software includes some powerful features you will not typically find in programs in the same category, it is still relatively easy to use.

RealWorld Paint Features

  • Compatible with different graphics: The program seamlessly combines vector and raster graphics to help you draw various objects, including Web icons, buttons and even your personal logo.
  • Retouching Photos: You can use the free image editor to crop or resize photos for various purposes, remove blemishes and even do some heavy photo-modding.
  • Creating animated GIF: GIF animation can help you draw the attention of people browsing your site to particular sections, and the software will let you create your own. It can also help you save space using automated GIF optimization.

RealWorld Paint supports layer effects, image blending, custom gradients, reflections, drop shadows and .8bf Photoshop filters. Although the program is pixel-oriented, it delivers the flexibility of vectors.

Using RealWorld Paint

We were pleased to find that RealWorld Paint was compatible with our existing projects. The program can import and export different image files with layers. For example, it imports Photoshop's .psd files with selected layer styles and then converts them to its own native layer styles.

The program gave us plenty of flexibility. We could change object shapes and colors in vector layers whenever we wanted and design arbitrary shapes using a great Shape tool.

The process of creating animated GIFs was relatively straight forward. We pasted pictures from the clipboard to create new frames. It is also possible to drag and drop pictures from a file manager into the workspace. We then modified the frames as normal layered images. Using the built-in animated GIF optimizer was easy.

As a free image editor, RealWorld includes:

  • Crop tool for removing perspective and cropping images
  • Clone tool for removing blemishes
  • Shapeshifter tool for changing shapes

  • Easy to use
  • Compatible with different file formats
  • Includes several powerful features
  • Accepts existing images in various ways, including dragging and dropping, pasting from clipboard and scanning
  • Ability to use mouse gestures to invoke commands

  • A bit slow when processing large images
RealWorld Paint is a portable program that does not depend on Java or .NET framework. Although the software is free, you can make a donation.

Software Product Description

RealWorld Paint.COM is a fun and nifty image viewer and editor. RealWorld Paint.COM can display images using any zoom factor and always shows 100% accurate preview of the drawn shape. Tooltips are displayed throughout the user interface to explain meaning of controls.

After a geometric shape is added to an image, control handles appear and users can further adjust the shape. New points can be added to poly-lines, curves and polygons by dragging a handle of an edge.

RealWorld Paint.COM allows you to edit pictures with layers and assign effects to every layer. A layer can have for example a bevel effect active giving all shapes a 3D look and feel.

RealWorld Paint.COM has much hidden power under the hood and harbors features unexpected in a freeware image editor. Many of its drawing tools and image filters are able to do gamma-aware blending and color gradient interpolation, producing correct colors by default.

A powerful scripting system allows users to greatly extend and customize the functionality of RW Paint.COM using JavaScript. For example the "Create screenshot" command (used to generate the screenshot above) is a scripted function.

Beside the ability to use native plug-ins for virtually everything (filters, tool, fills, windows, codecs, storage, ...), RealWorld Paint.COM is also able to use the vast amount of plug-ins compatible with Adobe Photoshop.

  • Invoke commands using mouse gestures - perform a gesture with right mouse button and something (configure it!) happens. Undoing was never easier.
  • Vista glass-like effects - draw semitransparent shapes (using "Xxx with effect" tool) and the editor makes your shape look like a window frame on Windows Vista - it blurs background and adds shadow and reflection.
  • Tool presets - save and quickly restore your favorite gradients, tool settings, or colors.

What's New in version 2013.1 SP1:

  • Flip or mirror floating selection from context menu.
  • Image effect configuration windows use a different layout with configuration in a single column at the right side of the window.
  • Holding SHIFT while drawing with Pencil or Brush tools forces a straight line.
  • Pasting layer style applies the style to all selected layers.
  • Changing frame duration while multiple frames are selected sets the duration to those frames.
  • Use image in clipboard when filling with pattern.
  • Shrink/grow image mask by multiple pixels; bugfixes related to image masks.
  • Multiple bugfixes and enhancements related to vector images, text elements and shape outlines.
  • Speedups when editing images with a lot of layers and layer styles.
  • Customizable application name and splash screen.

Pros: RealWorld Paint is an impressive program. It contains all of the basic paint functions as well as a number of very cool extened functions. If you're into creating digital images or editing digital photos, you really should give this program a try. And, personally, I found it fairly easy to use. If you're familiar with other paint programs, you should have no problem using this one after just 10 to 15 minutes of just tinkering around with it.

Cons: None, really. However, RealWorld paint would benefit by including a few more image effects.

Other Thoughts: Give it a try!
