Idle games are weird. At their heart, they all really do the same thing - build up a bunch of numbers while you don't actually play. This should mean that all idle games are essentially the same, but they really aren't. There's a definite difference between a great idler and one that just wants to maliciously waste your time.

Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to determine whether one of these games is good or bad from the get-go. What you can tell, at least, is whether the early game will be intriguing. Realm Grinder is one of those games that starts with a good hook and grows from there.

Realm Grinder is a fantasy/RPG-based idle game. You choose one of several factions to join and then build up your kingdom over time. Like all other idle games, this is done by a process of investing an in-game currency and tapping. Unlike most other idle games, though, this game does really try to provide a visual representation of growth. There's more than just menus here, even if what is represented is still incredibly basic by gaming standards. It wears its good and bad aspects on its sleeve, making judgment easy in a genre that's usually tough to judge.

On the plus side, Realm Grinder does go out of its way to make this idle game feel like a real game. There's a sense of progression that most other games in the genre miss and the visual representation is really nice to have. Unlike many other idlers, the game also benefits from not shoving a cash store in your face. You don't have to pay to win, something that's very nice. You also don't have to click that often - this game is truly made for being idle, so you won't miss much if you aren't wearing out your mouse.

The downside to Realm Grinder is inherent in all other games in the same genre. At the end of the day, you don't really get to do anything. By the time you reach the upper levels, hours (or day) can go by without your input. That's fine if you just like watching number grows, but it's hard to call this a real game at the same time. It appeals to a very select group of players, which isn't that bad. It's just sad that the game feels like so much more during the early stages.

Realm Grinder is a very good idle game and, ultimately, a boring video game. That's not a bad thing, though - the game knows what it is doing and satisfies the criteria of the genre quite well. If you are looking for an idler, this is definitely one that you need to try. It commits few of the genre's worst sins and makes improvements across the board. Just stay away from the game if you are actually expecting to do anything; there's just not much action in a game that relies on you not doing anything.
