Install, clone, or reinstall Microsoft Windows without a source disk or USB flash drive.

WinToHDD is a free system utility for installing, reinstalling, or cloning your version of Windows on another drive using an ISO, ESD, or WIM image file format. Alternatively, it enables the creation of a multi-installation USB drive.

Supporting any Windows 32- and 64- bit OS from Vista and up, the useful application gives you control of your space - install or reinstall where you prefer. Creating a USB multi-installation drive containing installation ISO files gives you the ability to install the OS on any BIOS and UEFI computer. Fully GPT/UEFI compatible, your ISO, ESD, or WIM image enables you to:

  • Install Windows without original CD/DVD or USB drive
  • Reinstall Windows without a source CD/DVD or USB drive
  • Hot clone your Windows OS between disks - even allowing for different sector sizes
  • Clone Windows without restarting the source computer
  • Bitlocker encrypt your Windows partition whether installing or cloning
  • Install any Windows version from a USB drive on any (BIOS or UEFI) computer

Using the four tools provided by WINToHDD

Download the free utility and launch to the simple user interface initially displaying icons to Reinstall Windows, New Installation, System Clone, and Multi-installation USB.

1. The New Installation button accesses your choice of installation - OS files or disk. To install Windows without the original CD/DVD, click the relevant button and WinToHDD will scan to list the installable operating systems. Select the OS version you require and click the 'Next' button. Complete the installation by following the subsequent destination instruction screens.

2. The Reinstall Windows access works in much the same way allowing you to browse for the ISO, select the version and click next. The target disk and partitions are automatically selected. Enable Bitlocker if you want to encrypt the Windows partition. Click 'Next' to continue, creating a Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE), enabling you to reboot to reinstall the Windows OS by clicking 'Yes' on the next screen.

3. The System Clone icon is your means to clone Windows. Click to select the Windows installation which brings up the system information. Click 'Next' to select the destination, clicking the 'Yes' button on the pop-up if it needs formatting, and select the partition scheme. Be aware that cloning takes time.

4. The Multi-Installation USB accesses a drop-down list where you can select and format your USB drive. Clicking 'Next' will enable WinToHDD to begin creating the multi-installation USB. Once this is completed, you can copy Window ISO files to the USB and use it to install the required Windows version on another computer.

Following any of these steps allows you to install, reinstall or clone your version of Windows or to create a multi-installation USB drive. The handy utility can prove very useful in any number of circumstances. 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista to 10 are supported.

Pros: Gui is nice.

Cons: Opened my browser to their website no less than four times without asking, acted just like spyware/adware. I wanted to clone my internal hdd to a USB connected HDD. Nowhere along the process did it say that this was not supported in the free version until after the software formatted the external drive and renamed it to WinToHDD. Then it says I have to upgrade in order to proceed. Highly dishonest in my opinion.

Other Thoughts: I will stick with Clonezilla.
