Are you the type of person who likes to keep abreast of the latest news covering various subjects from different parts of the world? Then BBC Headlines Reader will serve you well. The free tool displays the latest news headlines from the BBC right on your desktop.

The program gives you the option to create both desktop and quick launch icons for fast access, but you are free to choose what you want. The program starts minimized on the system tray.

When you initially launch the program, it displays an almost bare user interface with a 'Start' button on the lower right corner and a drop-down list on the lower center part. On the lower left corner is a button you can use to make a donation to the developers if you like and want to support their work.

The drop-down list lets you choose the type of news headlines you want the program to display. For example, you can select top stories, which is the default option. Other options include World, UK, Business, Politics, Health, Education & Family, Science & Environment, Technology, Entertainment & Arts, Sport, Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, US & Canada, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and wales.

Once you have made your selection, click the 'Start' button, and the display will populate with a list of news headlines in a couple of seconds. You will readily see which ones are videos or pictures, so you can choose what you want to read or view depending on your preferences.

To access the relevant content, double-click on a news headline, and the program will open BBC's website with your default browser.
