Free OCR is a complete scan and OCR program including the Tesseract free OCR engine v2.03. It includes a Windows installer, it is very simple to use and supports multi-page tiff´s, fax documents as well as most image types including compressed Tiff´s which the Tesseract engine on its own cannot read. It has Twain scanning included and support for multipage Tiff documents. Best of all it is totally free!

Requires Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

FreewareFiles tested Free OCR 4.2 on 2012-09-20 using leading antivirus scanners and found it 100% Clean. It does not contain any form of malware, spyware, viruses, trojans, etc. We will re-test each updated version and remove the award as well as the program if found infected.

Pros: Good accuracy.

Cons: Not at all suited for OCR'ing 'en-masse' as it will only process one page at a time - so with pdf's for example, you must manually select each page for processing. The application-size is misleading - this is just a 'downloader', the main OCR is retrieved from the net when run. It is still tiny in size compared to its commercial counterparts.

Other Thoughts: This really would be much better if it allowed entire pdf documents to be OCR'ed automatically.

BTW, it doesn't run on Linux Wine (with .NET 2.0 installed) Obviously not a 'Con' in the usual sense as it is a failing of Wine, not OCR 3.0 - more a FYI.
