Inno Setup is a useful tool for developers because it features many functions for packaging and distributing projects. The problem is that you cannot use it to extract resources from setup files as it is, which is where InnoEx proves useful. The application provides a simple graphical user interface for InnoUnp.

InnoEx Features

  • Simple and user-friendly
  • Works fast with many and large files
  • Supports drag and drop both ways
  • Ability to dump ini section and registry
  • Extracting files based on selected language
  • Shell extension (optional)
  • Pascal script disassembler (optional)

Using InnoEx

Since InnoEx is a portable application, we simply saved it to our preferred location and did not have to worry about leaving traces in the registry during installation and un-installation. The software included InnoUnp; hence we did not have to download and configure any other program.

We could add supported Inno setup installer to the main program window by browsing and selecting them or using drag and drop method. We could also use the drag and drop method when extracting files from the selected installer to another location.

However, we found that the method was only convenient when we were dealing with a few files of relatively small sizes. Extracting large or many files using the normal method was faster.

The program allowed us to specify the path to the destination where we wanted to extract files and directory name if necessary. We then chose whether to extract all files, selected ones or only (app) dir files. We also had the option to let the program rename files according to the 'DestName:' parameter.

Apart from selecting files by holding the ctrl key and clicking individual files, we could hold the key and slide through the items to make faster selection. The program also allowed us to choose 'selection mode' if we wanted to select items without pressing multiple keys.

The lower part of the user interface displayed the total number of files, total size, number of selected files, size of the selected files and status.

If you have many types of installers, you can search for Inno setup installers among them. You just need to add files, folder or directories and click the 'Start' button. You can let the 'Search for Inno Setup' dialog start automatically after dropping more than one file or a folder onto the main program window.

The program also makes it possible to detect encrypted files, which is not possible with the original InnoUnp. With the original InnoUnp, you must extract individual files and look for password notification. This is a tedious and time-consuming process.

Conclusion

InnoEx is a simple program for extracting Inno setup resources without the need for any other software. The program supports context menu and shell integration for more convenient use.
