A computer can crash at any time for various reasons, which is why it is important to have a way of booting up a system when it fails. SystemRescueCd is a versatile program that provides a simple way of performing different administrative tasks. It integrates many system utilities that allow users to easily repair computer systems after a crash. They just need to boot from the CD-ROMs that they create and perform all necessary tasks.

Features and Functions

Using the Linux system rescue disk takes a few simple steps, starting with downloading the software and writing it on a CD or installing it on a flash drive. Users need to download the appropriate ISO files for their architectures. Many people prefer the x86 edition because it is compatible with both 64-bit and 32-bit processors. Those whose systems are based on the sun architecture should download the SPARC edition.

There are three different methods of creating a system rescue disk on a USB flash drive, which are respectively recommended for installing from Linux, Linux using isohybrid and Windows. Users need the latest version of SystemRescueCd and a USB disk with at least 1 GB free space. Their systems must also be configured to boot from USB drives before the hard disk.

Users have four kernels to choose from when booting their systems: rescue32, rescue64, altker32 and altker64. There are also different boot options depending on what the user wants to do.

The software lets people repair computer systems using either basic or advanced options depending on their skill levels and requirements. Some of the advanced uses are aimed at blind people, thanks to the Linux speakup screen reader and speakup keymap.

Other functions include:

  • Customizing SystemRescueCd
  • Creating a backing-store for keeping personal modifications
  • Securing data deletion
  • Managing remote servers
  • Accessing SystemRescueCd remotely
  • Running personal scripts at startup
  • PXE network booting
  • Backing up and transferring data
  • Using Logical Volume Manager (LVM)
  • Disk partitioning
  • Linux networking

Conclusion

SystemRescueCd is a powerful program that enables a user to repair computer systems following a crash. The system rescue disk provides basic and advanced usage, and users can work either in the graphical environment or console mode.
