Wox is a full-featured open-source launcher for Windows, which gives quick access to programs and files on a computer. It is also useful in accessing web content as you type. You can use it to open local files or start applications right from the desktop.

Using Wox

We downloaded and extracted the program files on a destination folder from where we launched Wox. When we launched the program, it opened a dark-themed search bar where we typed what we wanted. The search bar always appeared on top despite the program we were using.

The program displayed relevant programs and other files as soon as we started typing keywords, with the list of displayed items changing in real time as we kept typing the keyword. We noticed that the launcher did not arrange the items in alphabetical order but according to their frequency of use.

We scrolled through the list of search results using either the up or down arrow key and then pressed 'Enter' when the item we wanted was highlighted. Alternatively, we could open files or launch programs by clicking on them.

The launcher made it easy to access some programs that required multiple clicking to reach and knowledge of their specific locations. For example, modern Windows operating systems do not readily give access to 'Phone and Modems' option even from the Control Panel. However, the program displayed it as soon as we had only typed the keyword 'ph' or 'mod,' and clicking on it in the list opened it immediately.

When we wanted to search the web instead of the local drive, we prefixed our search keywords as 'g' and 'wiki' depending on where we wanted to make the search. For example, prefixing 'g' enabled us to make a search on Google.

Vox automatically closed once the clicked program was launched; so we found it useful to create its shortcut on the desktop for faster access.

The program made it easy to perform even such common tasks as closing the computer. On our system, typing 'sh' was enough to display the shutdown option on top of the list. We simply clicked 'Enter' twice to close the computer.

Conclusion

Sometimes searching for desired files or programs on a computer can be challenging. Although Windows includes a search facility that you can use, it may not be as fast as you want, and it is of little use if you do not know the location to search. Thankfully Wox allows you to search whatever you want on your computer or the web right from your desktop. The program displays relevant items as you type your desired keyword. Simply click on what you want in the list to open it and close the free launcher simultaneously.
