Piriform, this application's developer, is now well established as one of those quality software companies universally (small planet) appreciated. "Recuva" is no exception, and runs smooth and efficient as the remaining of the family! - Try is keep. Forgot: free! by: Balloney | 5 | 2009-10-30 | | | | "Exceptional"
This is a true enigma on your PC. Try it and use it! by: bbullett | 5 | 2009-07-01 | | | | ""

This is the only one worth downloading. I am a big supporter of Piriforms stuff. It's free, it works, its that simple. This is a one stop shop for file recovery, everybody elses programs are just pretending to be as good as this one, trust me.. by: Alan Holmes | 5 | 2009-02-24 | | | | "Incredible"
After reformatting my computer, I accidentally ran a quick reformat on my external drive.
I ran Recuva in deep-scan overnight, and it found everything, nearly 2000 files! by: John Smithers | 5 | 2009-02-16 | | | | "Good recovery"
I recovered 10 files that just have been deleted few minutes ago and could get them back fully 8 files. The program is easy to use. Thanks.

I don't need or use this type of program that much
but of the several I've tried , this seems the least confusing and most helpful with so many ways to look at an entry, view mode and with Info tab.
It has a Deleter that overwrites the file content... but why not have a Wiper --- taking out the file name and path, as well. This would also make subsequent searches easier (less clutter) and add privacy.
I know it's primed as a recoverer but I had to run the deleter several times -- I selected all files for delete --- it would say a file content was overwritten yet upon rescan many (excluding the files in 'resident' or 'zero size file') were indicated as 'Excellent', 'no overwrite detected'. by: mweizor | 4 | 2008-07-30 | | | | "got my vote....!!"
i just tried 3 different freeware 'undelete' programs and Recuva 1.16.333 was the only one to recover the deleted files successfully! thank you Recuva 1.16.333. by: evo | 5 | 2008-07-15 | | | | "Useful"
It's Vista compatible. The author site says "Runs on Microsoft Windows Vista..."
Recuva is like most utilities in this genre: Imperfect but potentially useful if you have no backups available. by: petri | 4 | 2008-07-09 | | | | "Heiy Heiy Heiy...."

Win2000/WinXP ONLY !!! by: The Bro | 5 | 2008-05-22 | | | | "Didn't find a simple doc file"
I am running Vista Ultimate, after installation of Recuva I decided to test the program by deleting a doc file. After running Recuva it reported no files found. Has anyone any idea what may be wrong please. It says the program is Vista compatible on their website. by: Tall53 | 1 | 2008-05-21 | | | | ""

Tested this utility thoroughly under Vista. It runs extremely fast and does a good job of identifying files for recovery. However, the secure deletion function leaves much to be desired, at least under Vista. Yes, I am aware that FileForum does not state that this utility works under Vista, however the author does. I 'undeleted' 3 plain text files and they were 'good as new.' Next I securely deleted them. Re-ran Recuva and this time it only identified 2 of the 3 as recoverable. Indeed this was true. I undeleted the 3 files again and this time one of them was 'empty', but the other 2 were 'good as new.' One more issue with secure deletion is that even IF files get securely deleted, the file name is untouched. File names often carry data such as bank account information, so it's important to obliterate the file name, as well as it's content. Summarizing - I would use this as a file recovery utility, but stick with one of the proven erasers such as 'Eraser' or '4Neurons Eraser' for true secure file (and file name) wiping. by: Shodan | 3 | 2008-02-26 | | | | "Handy, & it recovers!"
Could be more handy than you think!
I know under XP, if someone has a password protected account, for example, & they lost the password, or got a corrupted system file....
Horrors, all their data is lost, & you can't get it back because you DIDN'T HAVE THE PASSWORD.
No need to hack the password. If you want to help them recover the data, slave it off to an external usb drive enclosure, then navigate to it with a data recovery program.
I know Handy Recovery will get around the passwords & recover even hidden files. I am not sure on Recuva, although I do know that their data recovery works.
This can save you many hours of frustration. The version 1 of their software works, but stumbles on certain files, & seems to have trouble doing whole dir trees at once. If you get Handy Recovery version 3 or higher, it should be able to recovery ANY password protected account & the dir trees as well. Saving you lots of time if someone has thousands of files. Even if the files aren't "deleted" but still there on the drive, it will "recover" them.
Always remember to recover to another drive to avoid loss, that windows always generates a size 0 for password protected accounts in addition to the access denied error, but Handy Recovery (& possibly Recuva as well) will help you avoid losing your hard work.
They will show you the files that windowz won't. And recover them so that you can yes, read them without a password. In addition, if you don't see your files listed, try the advanced disk scan, or deep disk scan, surface scan. If it is present on Recuva, use it if you need to, if not, try pandora recovery or Handy Recovery.
Peace, & enjoy! Recuva is a great tool to be free!
P.S. Vista? Who needs Vista? In addition to Vista breaking Recuva, it also breaks antivirus apps, & has the trusted computing platform built in, in addition to the nightmare from you know what about product activation that just won't go away.
