One of the best things about the free to play space is that it gives companies a chance to do things for which most people would not pay. Unfortunately, too many of these games play it safe and try to stick to the formulas that make AAA games successful. There are a precious few, though, that are willing to get weird. They ask important questions and figure that the answers will come later. Sometimes, the questions asked are deep and philosophical. Other times, like in Formicide, they're as simple as asking what would happen if you turned Worms into a Team Fortress game.

Fast-paced, Frenzied, and Fun

Formicide takes you under the earth to fight ant versus ant in an incredibly kitschy shooter. The game is a class-based shooter, allowing players to pick one of a number of ant-based traditional shooter classes. From there, you'll be participating in fast-paced shooter matches that are often interrupted by game-changing events. The skill ceiling is high and long-time players tend to dominate, but there's enough random chance in the game that almost everyone can have a great deal of fun. It's not your typical free to play game on Steam, and that's a good thing.

This game is almost unrealistically fun. It's like a strange mix of Team Fortress 2 and Worms. It has all the frantic game play of the former game, but it looks and feels a lot like the latter. What you end up getting is an incredibly silly and frantic shooter that takes place on a 2D plane. While most games of this ilk are forgettable Flash games, what's been created here really is something special. While you could probably complain about the depth at a higher price point, the fact that it is free really removes most of the potential problems.

Are there flaws in the game? It depends on what you're looking for, really. On one hand, this is a multiplayer game so most of your experiences are going to be dictated by the people with whom your are playing. On the other, though, the game is so fast that you shouldn't really have all that much time to get angry. There's also some small issues concerning graphical quality, but this is a really a situation where you get what you pay for. Formicide could probably look better, but that'd raise the price of the game.

Conclusion

Formicide is an incredibly solid game. It's actually quite surprising that it's free, all told. It might not have the fanciest graphics ever to grace your screen, but it's a fantastic fit for the game itself. If you're looking for fast and frantic 2D shooter action, this is a great game for you. If you're looking for something that scratches the same itch as Worms or even Team Fortress 2, you'll be happy. This is exactly the kind of game that can become addictive in all the best ways. Sometimes, all that a game needs to be great is to be fun - and that's exactly what Formicide manages to do.
