| "A Swiss Army Knife of A/V" Mediacoder is the Swiss Army knife of A/V, I have used it for the past 2 years to process video files from my Topfield (.REC files) to AVI and MP4 and audio REC files to MP3 format.
It takes experience to get into it, as there are few user guides, but it is far better, more flexible and quicker than commercial options.
If you are not a techie keep with it as it will reward your efforts.
All it needs is a frame to frame editor and it will be the complete thing, but Video Re Do TV Suite is the perfect tool to add before Medicoder to do this (output in MPG format).
However don't get carried away updating your version all the time and establish your own stable edition which suits you, placing any updates in a new directory and treat them as experimental until you are happy with it as bug free and it becomes your new stable version.
I have slowly expanded my area of usage of this software as my experience grows, other more techie people may well master it more quickly.

| "Powerful, but not too easy" http://www.any-video-converter.com/ has a really powerful AND easy convertor.
Operation should be simple... Select a movie to encode, select the format, hit decode!
Advance options should be rolled up on the side, not cause confusion & hysteria when someone tries to use the program!

| "Tried it 3 times, never worked" I'm sorry to say it, but this program stinks. I tried it 3 times. The first time was when I tried to help my friend convert 3GPP files to MPG. The Start button did nothing--no errors, logs, etc. The second time was when I wanted to convert some music from WAV to MP3. It played, but it sounded like an old cassette tape when the reels in the cassette are stiff from alot of playback. The third time I tried it was tonight when I wanted to convert an important video file to MPEG2. It took 20 minutes to convert, and when it was done, there was no video or audio, and also no error to show what happened. Finally when I exited the program, it crashed. The english in the program is pitiful. When I selected the wrong audio codec, I got the error "No file was outputted [sic]."

| "Ugh!" What an atrocity. The interface is unusable at 120 DPI, and from what I could make out, the usability completely SUCKS. I've seen other powerful transcoder software, and there IS a way to do it that doesn't suck so hard.

| "Confusing" Was trying this software out to convert my WMV file to MPEG format. I'd say for a newbie the interface can be confusing with all the different settings available. I prefer a more straight forward and simple approach like Media Converter SA Ed.

| "Kinda Difficult" Overall a good program, if you are well known with media codecs.
The good: Free! Supports a lot formats. Really adjustable.
The bad: Unfinished. Needs Firefox (who doesn't use it). Bad Vista compatibility. Hard to use.
The Ugly: Not enough people use it!
