Free firewall blocks outbound connections from being made without your knowledge.

An Open Source firewall application, ProgCop works with the Windows Firewall using the Windows Application Programming Interface (API) to block apps from accessing the internet. It provides a real-time display of the applications and processes on your system that connect to the internet, and the option to stop them.

We all know how important it is today to ensure our privacy when we are using the internet. Unfortunately, many applications actually connect without you knowing they are sending information back to the developers of the specific program. ProgCop is a free firewall that keeps you informed and enables you to make the decisions on the applications and processes that connect.

Incredibly stable due to the fact that it is using Windows drivers, ProgCop's other features include:

  • Displays installed and executable applications that connect to the internet
  • Blocks or unblocks programs from connecting with just a single click
  • Stops apps from phoning your phone
  • HiDPI resolution support where required
  • IPv6 ready
  • Low use of resources since it is not an application that constantly runs in the background

Protect your privacy

Download ProgCop and block apps from accessing the internet. Unzip the download file and extract and run the portable program. You will be asked for permissions since admin privileges are required to run ProgCop.

The simple interface comprises a menu bar and a toolbar with icons to Add and Remove applications, Block and Unblock selections and a Settings tab. Beneath the menu toolbar, there are two horizontal panels. The lower panel displays the processes that connect and any concurrently connected applications. Information columns show the Process name, Local and remote addresses, Local and Remote ports, State (Listening or Established) and the process ID (PID).

The upper panel displays the processes you have blocked and has three columns - Application path, Process name, and State, i.e. Blocked or Unblocked.

To block an application and display it in the upper panel, click the Add icon on the toolbar or use the Rules menu to browse to and double click the program. It will display the application as blocked and with the text in all three columns colored green. Select and click the Unblock icon when you wish to unblock it. It will display in red. You can select it and click the Block icon to block it again. Applications can be removed from the panel by selecting them and clicking the Remove application icon.

Clicking the Settings icon on the toolbar brings up a pop-up window with a checkbox to place ProgCop in the system tray and a second checkbox to enable IPv6.

To block apps from accessing the internet, the free firewall application requires the Windows Firewall to be running, .NET Framework and admin privileges.
