Incremental games are the latest craze in the world of online gaming. If you think about it, they make a perverse kind of sense - they give players all the thrill of progression without any of the tedious game-playing that makes progression so tough. There are good incremental games and bad, of course, and some of the games in this genre do at least put in a bit of effort. One of these games is Shakes and Fidget, a game that attempts to meld a satirical fantasy world with the mechanics of automated progression. How well it works is up to the individual player.

If you've played one incremental game, you've pretty much played them all. In Shakes and Fidget, you'll slowly but surely start to fill up various meters in order to progress. You don't actually have to do anything here - you press a button and let the game do the work. In the background of all of this is a fairly silly fantasy world, something that's halfway between what you made up as a kid and what you make fun of as an adult. It's not the most original world ever made, but it's a fair bit of fun for most players.

It's important to set the game apart from others in the genre, and Shakes and Fidget does this almost entirely through its world. There's something charming about the game, something almost childlike in how things are set up. It's the kind of game that appeals to a very specific audience and does it well. It also sets itself apart by offering real guild and PVP content once you get to higher levels. It's not exactly the most competitive stuff in the world, but it's nice to see in a genre that typically goes for as little content as possible.

Unfortunately, you're still looking at an incremental/AFK game. That's going to be enough to turn some players off. If you actually expect some gameplay in your game, you're going to want to look somewhere else. Unless you are the kind of person who absolutely adores this genre, you won't get more than an hour or so out of this game. There's nothing wrong with that, but one must note that the game isn't going to appeal to anyone outside of a very small niche. It tries to do some fantastic things, but the basic premise holds the game back.

It would be nice to see a little more of this kind of satire connected to a more traditional game. As it stands, Shakes and Fidget stands as a fine incremental game that will do well among incremental players. If you don't like this genre or you wish that there was some actual action, you should probably take a pass. If you do like watching meters fill up and you prefer to have a little fantasy satire window dressing, though, it's hard not to recommend this game. Be warned, though - if you don't love this game, you'll probably hate it. There's no middle ground.
